Columbia’s 34th Pride Festival Brings Community Together in Celebration of Queer Joy and Resilience

Columbia Celebrates 34 Years of Pride with Vibrant Festival

Columbia, S.C. has turned into a vibrant tapestry of colors and joy as the South Carolina Midlands celebrates its 34th Pride Festival—the Famously Hot South Carolina Pride. The festivities kicked off with an uplifting parade in downtown Columbia on Friday evening, bringing together hundreds of participants who radiated with excitement and exuberance.

A Celebration of Queer Joy and Resilience

“This is about celebrating and experiencing queer joy,” expressed Dylan Gunnels, the president of Famously Hot South Carolina Pride. “We emphasize queer resilience; we aim to highlight the positives rather than dwelling on negative narratives often associated with our community.” In a world where stories can all too often take a darker turn, this festival served as a reminder that joy and resilience can shine brightly.

A Grand Parade with Heart

The “Get Lit” parade was a sight to behold, with endless creativity and color as hundreds joined together to decorate floats, don their most festive outfits, or simply show their support. “We aspire to create an event that lasts, one that makes a real impact on our state,” Gunnels added, emphasizing the dedication and passion of the non-profit team, which consists of just 16 hardworking individuals. “Putting on this event can be exhausting, but it’s worth every moment.”

A Gathering of Communities

Julie Turner, the S.C. state chapter leader of Free Mom Hugs, reflected on the importance of such a gathering: “It feels incredible to host an event like this in Columbia. Many from surrounding areas come here, and this celebration becomes a major source of revenue for the downtown community. Beyond that, it is meaningful in so many ways.”

John White, a member of the Midlands Men’s Chorus, noted the significance of having Pride celebrated in a smaller city rather than only in larger urban centers. “It’s vital for people to recognize that there’s a community here. One doesn’t need to travel to a big city to celebrate Pride. You can embrace it right here in your backyard, and it’s heartening to see the community come together to show support.”

Evening Festivities and Entertainment

The parade kicked off as the sun set, making for a breathtaking backdrop against the festivities. Laurel Street buzzed with excitement as the event unfolded, featuring live music, a spectacular RuPaul’s Drag Race Hour, and highlights from over 80 LGBTQ+-owned businesses, showcasing the diverse offerings in the community.

“Every year, this event serves not just as a festival, but as a warm embrace for every single queer individual in the state,” explained Gunnels. “We want every person to feel belonged, to know they are loved, and to find connections within the community.”

Planning for the Future

Behind the scenes, the non-profit team gears up for the next big event as they plan for 2025. This annual event isn’t just a one-time gathering; it represents an ongoing commitment to ensuring the LGBTQ+ community feels celebrated and supported throughout the year. They are set to convene in November to lay down the groundwork for future initiatives and gatherings.

As Columbia continues to festoon itself with love, acceptance, and vibrant celebration, the Famously Hot South Carolina Pride Festival serves as a heartfelt reminder of the community’s strength and resilience, making it a night to remember for all.
