Exciting New Chapter for Columbia: Luxury Apartments Set to Transform the Downtown Scene!

Columbia’s skyline is about to see a big change, and it’s going to be a fabulous one! A long-awaited luxury apartment complex at 2222 Main Street is finally kicking off, and there’s a twist – it’s actually bigger than we initially thought!

From a Car Lot to Luxury Living

It all began back in 2021 when the city gave the green light for a major overhaul of this nearly 6-acre property that used to house the Jim Moore Cadillac site. Once an auto-repair hub from the ’50s until 2009, the area has sat empty for years, yearning for something fresh and lively. Enter developer Steve Middleton, the brains behind Commonwealth Properties. He has big dreams to create the “nicest” apartments in Columbia, and we’re all ears!

Luxury Features Galore!

So, what’s in store for future residents? Think 250 luxurious apartments boasting impressive 12-foot high ceilings, elegant crown molding, and a plethora of amenities like a swimming pool and heated spa area! But wait, there’s more! After carefully reevaluating their plans, the developers decided to expand the project to include an impressive 320 units in total, ensuring the project remains cost-effective amidst rising construction prices.

Each of these one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments will cover an average of 929 square feet, providing plenty of room for style and comfort. Residents can look forward to stunning courtyards, a relaxing pool, and spa, along with a sundeck, all designed to offer a little slice of paradise right in the heart of Columbia.

Paw-sitive Vibes with Rooftop Amenities!

Pet lovers will be thrilled about the rooftop dog park, where furry friends can frolic while their humans enjoy the views. Plus, the rooftop will feature a stylish club room, game room, and two rooftop decks designed for soaking in those breathtaking sunsets over the pool courtyard and the scenic business district of Columbia.

Parking and Traffic Improvements Ahead

Worried about parking? Fret not! Along with the new apartments, developers will also include a 467-unit parking garage and a charming little lot with 47 surface parking spots. This ensures that residents will have plenty of space for their vehicles. The plans also come with a detailed traffic study. It suggests some clever tweaks to the streets around the property, including new turn lanes on North Main Street and narrowing southbound traffic to one lane, creating a smoother flow toward downtown.

Community Support Shines Bright

The reception from the local community appears overwhelmingly positive. A supportive letter from the Cottontown Bellevue Historic District Neighborhood Association, dated Nov. 8, 2024, was included in the developer’s application, expressing enthusiasm for the project and highlighting ongoing communication with Middleton since 2021.

The Planning Commission is All Ears!

Mark your calendars! The Columbia Planning Commission will deliberate over the updated apartment proposal at their next meeting on Thursday. Curious residents can join the discussions in person at 1737 Main Street, or tune in online at youtube.com/@CityofColumbiaGovernment to stay in the loop.

In summary, it looks like Columbia’s downtown area is set for a much-needed upgrade. This luxury apartment complex is not just a building, but a gateway to a vibrant living experience that’s ready to breathe new life into our beloved city! Stay tuned as this exciting project unfolds!
