Columbia's Nightlife Transformed by Black Venus Collective's Inclusive Movement

Columbia’s Nightlife Just Got a Major Facelift!

Hey there, Columbia! If you’re on the lookout for some fun and dynamic nightlife, you might want to check out what’s happening with the Black Venus Collective. Launched just this past spring, this fresh new movement is all set to shake up the club scene in our lovely city by providing an inclusive, vibrant, and safe space for the Black community.

Creating Safe Spaces in Columbia

On Friday, November 22, 2024, a mesmerizing night took place at the New Brookland Tavern, where local DJs Wandergirl and Kris Love spun their magic for an audience ready to dance the night away. You could feel the excitement in the air as everyone let loose on the dance floor, caught up in the rhythm of house and funk music that made the night truly unforgettable.

But beyond the dance and beats, the purpose of the Black Venus Collective is all about promoting “healthy escapism.” As DJ Wandergirl, also known as Amber Glover, put it, she wanted to create a place where people—especially those considered “alternative Black folks”—can come together to celebrate, connect, and just be themselves. It’s no surprise, given how seeing cliques and a predominately White crowd can dampen the spirits in the club scene.

From Dream to Reality

The idea of the Black Venus Collective sprouted from Wandergirl’s own experiences as a DJ, yearning to see more inclusivity and diversity come to the dance parties in Columbia. When they kicked off their very first set back in April, it was a nerve-wracking moment for Wandergirl. “I thought no one would show up!” she admitted with a laugh. But to her surprise, the turnout was amazing, filled with joy and energy that brought a tear to her eyes.

The Collective has been instrumental in hosting themed nights dedicated to different genres and celebrations, from Afrofunk to their annual Juneteenth festivities. Each night aims to bring community members together, providing a dose of joy that’s so essential in our chaotic lives.

Striving for a Positive Vibe

While the beats and lights are undoubtedly a part of the experience, ensuring safety in their club environment is a top priority for Wandergirl and Kris Love. Having witnessed firsthand the troubles that can arise in the nightlife scene—like overdrinking or conflicts—they are committed to promoting an atmosphere that allows individuals to express themselves while leaving the drama behind. “Getting home safe is the most important thing at the end of the night,” Kris emphasized.

In a time when many are feeling disconnected, especially after the pandemic, the Black Venus Collective stands as a beacon of connection. “It’s so heartwarming to see people engaging and having fun together during our shows,” added Wandergirl. Built as a sanctuary where people can escape the pressures of everyday life, it’s no wonder folks are finding joy on the dance floor while shaking off their concerns.

Looking Ahead: Growing the Vibe

As the Black Venus Collective continues to gain momentum, they have exciting plans on the horizon. Along with their goal of inviting more Black DJs and musicians to perform, you can expect their themed parties and annual events to keep rolling. It’s all about the community and fun, where everyone can come to enjoy great music and feel free to be themselves.

So, if you’re ready to be part of Columbia’s evolving nightlife, make sure to keep an eye on the Black Venus Collective’s events and join the community vibe by following them on Instagram @blackvenuscollective. Because after all, who wouldn’t want to experience a night of dance, joy, and connection?
