Columbia Celebrates "Wreaths Across America" Month to Honor Veterans This December

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A Month to Honor Our Heroes

This December, Columbia is stepping up in a big way to honor our Veterans. Governor Henry McMaster has officially proclaimed the month as “Wreaths Across America” Month. It’s a time for remembrance, gratitude, and action as the community gears up to pay tribute to those who have served our country.

Joining Hands Across the Nation

On December 14, an impressive 2 million volunteers all over the nation will come together in a heartfelt effort. Armed with holiday spirit and love for their country, they will place wreaths on the graves of Veterans, ensuring that these brave individuals are remembered and honored.

Here in Columbia, we won’t be left out of the special celebration. At Fort Jackson National Cemetery, a whopping 13,000 wreaths will be laid at noon on that same day. This local effort highlights how much we care for our heroes, steadfast in our commitment to remember their sacrifices even in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

Get Involved: A Community Call to Action

Participating in this tribute is simple! Each wreath costs $17, which goes towards the sponsorship of these honors. If you’re feeling moved to contribute, there’s still plenty of time to get involved. You can donate directly to help sponsor the wreaths laid at Fort Jackson and other cemeteries across the nation. Your support goes a long way in making this heartfelt mission possible.

But wait, there’s more! Not only is this a magnificent way to give back, but it also fosters a sense of community and togetherness. Families, friends, and neighbors can gather to participate in the wreath-laying ceremonies, sharing stories and reflecting on the courage and bravery of our Veterans. It’s both a somber and joyous occasion — a time to connect and remember.

The Meaning Behind the Wreaths

Why are wreaths so significant? Well, the circular shape of the wreath symbolizes eternal life, an appropriate tribute for those who have passed on. The greenery represents strength and endurance. As we place these beautiful wreaths, we are not just marking a grave, but we are telling every family that their loved one’s sacrifice will never be forgotten.

A National Movement

The Wreaths Across America organization has built a powerful movement since its inception, which not only focuses on honoring Veterans but also highlights the importance of education regarding the sacrifices made for our freedom. As part of their mission, they are committed to teaching the next generation about the meaning of service, sacrifice, and community.

By participating in such events, we are taking part in a larger narrative: a dedication to ensuring that our Veterans are always remembered, and that their stories continue to inspire. It’s about building bridges through education, remembrance, and heartfelt action.

A Special Time of Year

As the holidays approach, it’s easy to get caught up in shopping, parties, and all the festivities. But this December, Columbia invites you to take a moment to reflect on who truly deserves our gratitude — those who’ve put their lives on the line to protect our country and freedoms.

So mark your calendars! On December 14, let’s show up, wreaths in hand, hearts full of gratitude, and honor our heroes in the most beautiful way. Together, we can ensure that no Veteran is ever forgotten.
