Holiday Fire Safety Tips to Keep Your Home Safe During the Festive Season

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Holiday Fire Safety: What You Need to Know

As the holiday season approaches and the temperatures start to dip, it’s time to bring out the decorations and warm up those cozy spaces. But have you ever considered that this beautiful time of year could increase the risk of fires in your home? Yes, it’s true! With everyone eager to make their homes festive, fire safety needs to be on the forefront of your mind.

Stay Warm, But Stay Safe!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the use of space heaters significantly raises fire risks during the winter months. Mike DeSumma from the Columbia Richland Fire Department emphasizes that we should be extra cautious while using these devices. “This time of year, many people are turning on their heaters and other heating equipment for the first time,” he said.

So what’s the best way to keep your home safe? DeSumma suggests paying close attention to your space heater—just like you would when cooking. “Once you turn those space heaters on, you can’t leave them unattended. That’s a recipe for disaster!” he warned. Plus, always make sure those heaters are on a flat surface. Nobody wants a heater tipping over, right?

Don’t Forget About Your Fireplace!

If your plans involve snuggling up by a crackling fire, you’ll want to be just as vigilant. DeSumma advises, “If you’re going to start a fire in your fireplace, you have to keep an eye on it. Also, get your chimney inspected regularly.” Just a small crack or buildup can turn a cozy gathering into a heating hazard.

Real Trees? Don’t Let Them Dry Out!

Now let’s talk about that centerpiece of Christmas cheer—the real Christmas tree! If you have one in your home, remember: those trees need water! “The tree is going to take up a lot of water. If it dries out, you essentially have live kindling in your living room,” DeSumma explained. Keeping it watered helps ensure your tree remains a joyous decoration rather than a fire risk!

Light Up Safely!

What’s Christmas without glowing lights and festive decorations? However, according to the NFPA, nearly one-third of Christmas tree fires stem from electrical problems. DeSumma suggests taking a few minutes to check your lights and decorations when you take them out of storage each year. “Lay them out and take a good look at the wiring,” he said. Over time, decorations can get worn out, and frayed wires are a definite no-no!

Be Cautious with Candles

Last but certainly not least—let’s talk about candles. While they add a charming ambiance, DeSumma urges everyone to be mindful. He recommends considering battery-powered candles as a safer alternative. “But if you must use traditional candles, never leave them unattended,” he warns. A candle left burning could easily turn into a fire disaster!

Final Thoughts

As you prepare to deck the halls and warm up your home for the holidays, remember that your safety should be just as bright as your festive lights. By keeping an eye on your heating equipment, watering your tree, checking your decorations, and using candles wisely, you can enjoy all the joys of the season without worrying about fire hazards. Stay safe and happy holidays, Columbia!
