Columbia’s Historic Gem Getting a New Lease on Life

In the heart of Columbia’s bustling Vista District, a piece of history is about to get a stunning makeover. The Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Building, which dates back to 1912, is undergoing a multi-million-dollar restoration that promises to blend modern workspaces with the building’s unique vintage charm.

A Blast from the Past

For many locals, this building is a cherished memory. It was once the go-to spot for sweets and treats, with the Palmetto Candy & Tobacco Company serving up everything from delicious confections to sodas. If you are among those who recall the days of visiting a spot that boasted the only mechanical elevator in the city, you’re not alone! Those were certainly the times when you could see the original candy-making tools in action and huge steel tables heaping with an assortment of candy and snacks.

What’s Changing?

The restoration project is a brainchild of Jerry and Ben’s LLC, a Columbia-based real estate investment firm that purchased the building back in 2021. They’ve enlisted the expertise of Boyer Commercial Construction to oversee an all-encompassing rehabilitation project, which is slated for completion by the end of December 2024. MCA Architecture from Greenville is stepping in to ensure the design reflects both modern needs and historical aesthetics.

Keeping History Alive

The grand vision is to create a modern workspace that still exudes historic flair. The developers are keen on preserving the building’s essential elements while upgrading necessary infrastructure to meet today’s standards. It’s not just a renovation; it’s a love letter to Columbia’s architectural history.

New Beginnings

Beam & Hinge LLC, a custom website design and development firm relocating from Columbia’s Main Street. This move coincides beautifully with the company’s 10-year anniversary and the launch of its newly redesigned website. Dan Stanton, CEO of Beam & Hinge, expressed enthusiasm for the transition, saying it is expected to foster a collaborative atmosphere, benefiting both their team and clientele.

Meanwhile, the first floor of the building is being divided into two spacious units of over 1,900 square feet each, ready to accommodate office or retail tenants. It’s a fantastic opportunity for new businesses to make their mark in a revitalized space that resonates with history and charm.

A Community Focus

Trinity Partners is stepping into the leasing role for the property, aiming to bring life and energy back into the Vista District while ensuring the building becomes a vibrant part of the local business community. The project has also smartly secured The Bailey Bill, along with federal and state historic preservation tax credits, to support the restoration efforts. This means taxpayers will get a little help with keeping history alive.
