Brooks McDowell Signs to Play Baseball at Columbia International University

In Bethany, December 19, 2024 — Bethany Community School senior Brooks McDowell has officially signed a National Letter of Intent to play college baseball at Columbia International University (CIU), a move that aligns with his lifelong passion for the sport. This milestone, celebrated on National Signing Day, marks a significant step for the young athlete as he prepares for graduation in June 2025.

A Family Affair

Brooks, the youngest of four siblings, has found immense support from his family throughout his baseball journey. His mother, Amy McDowell, emphasizes that their household has always been close-knit. Brooks plays not only for his love of the game but also to honor his sister, Madeline, who bravely battled leukemia since 2017. Despite the challenges, Madeline has emerged victorious in her fight against cancer, becoming a vital source of inspiration for Brooks.

Passion for Baseball

Baseball has been a central part of the McDowell family’s life, largely influenced by his father, Mac McDowell, a former college pitcher. Brooks has taken to the field with the same enthusiasm his father once showed. His talent on the field has earned him spots on prestigious teams, including being named to the North Carolina Baseball Coaches Association 1A All-State Team following his junior year and receiving recognition as a Northwest Piedmont All-Conference player.

Training and Development

This past year, Brooks transitioned into the role of catcher, a position he has embraced after previously playing as a pitcher and third baseman. He maintains a rigorous training schedule, working with his father and at the NC Baseball Academy in Greensboro, known for cultivating talent in the sport. Under the guidance of coach Scott Bankhead, who has a storied background in baseball, Brooks is honing the skills necessary to compete at the collegiate level.

Preparing for the Next Chapter

Columbia International University is well-regarded in collegiate athletics, having won the NCCAA National Championship in 2021. Brooks is excited to be part of a program that consistently performs at a high level in post-season contests. He views the gamble of college athletics as a natural progression towards achieving his dreams while remaining grounded in family and faith.

Finding Purpose Through Adversity

Reflecting on the trials faced by his sister, Brooks notes that her experience has shaped his own outlook on life. “When my sister was diagnosed with leukemia, she missed all of her opportunities to play sports,” he said. “Baseball was my outlet… my way of coping.” Motivated by his sister’s journey, Brooks strives to excel and often dedicates his successes to her, often bringing game balls back to her after a good performance.

Conclusion

As Brooks prepares for this new chapter at Columbia International University, he does so with the support of his family and the resilience shaped by his sister’s battle with cancer. With a strong sense of community, dedication, and love for the game, Brooks McDowell is ready to step onto the collegiate field as both an athlete and a symbol of hope for many.
