South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus Celebrates 3rd Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities Day

The South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus hosted its third annual appreciation ceremony to honor the historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in the Palmetto State. This milestone event was held at the esteemed South Carolina State House on a recent Tuesday.

Event Highlights

Significant moments of the event included a joint press conference conducted by HBCU Presidents and Student Government Association (SGA) members from various historically black colleges and universities across the state. The conference was filled with insightful speeches, roundtable discussions, and exchanges of ideas. The event not only served as a celebration, but also as a platform to address and discuss the challenges and opportunities that HBCU students face.

Signed Into Law

The annual appreciation day for HBCUs was officially signed into law in 2022 by Governor Henry McMaster and is celebrated every third Tuesday of February. The purpose of this dedicated day is to acknowledge the historical significance of these institutions and their role in shaping the nation’s higher education landscape. It’s also an opportunity to highlight the need for continued support and financial investment in HBCUs.
