Soulful Saxophonist Phillip ‘Doc’ Martin Set to Enthrall Audience at Chayz Lounge

The talented musician’s unique mix of smooth jazz and soulful grit promises to heat up a hot Saturday night.

Lexington, June 30, 2024

When most artists don the title of ‘Doc,’ it’s usually a playful nod to their proficiency in their craft, or a clever marketing ploy, with no actual connections to the medical profession. However, that’s not the case with Phillip “Doc” Martin. He’s not just a skilled, celebrated saxophonist, but also a practicing board-certified dentist, set to perform at the Chayz Lounge on Meeting Street this Saturday night.

Since the launch of his debut, ‘Saxappeal,’ in 2003, Martin has acquired a reputation as a true maestro of the saxophone. His performances have captivated audiences from Blues Alley in D.C. to global stages such as the St. Lucia Jazz Festival and the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival.

Martin not only excites the crowd with his live performances, but his recorded tracks such as ‘Deep Pockets’ and ‘Realization’ from his 2009 album also receive serious airplay on radio channels and platforms. His most recent release, the eloquently titled EP, “Christmas,” is a testament to Martin’s capacity to infuse soul into even the most clichéd Christmas carol.

A Double Life

Despite being in the limelight for his music, the success story of Phillip ‘Doc’ Martin goes beyond just his musical career. This acclaimed saxophonist and dentist, who got his musical education at the University of Central Florida, has shared stage time with esteemed artists like Sam Rivers, Marcus Johnson, Sisaundra Lewis, and Sunnie Paxton.

Apart from his musical achievements, Martin also runs a group dental practice in Washington, D.C., proving his dedication and diligence in his dual careers. His notable success in both fields is reflected in his hit singles; ‘Vibin’ In Time,’ which topped the Billboard charts, and ‘This Doc Is In The House,’ a statement of his purpose, made it into the top ten.

When Dentistry Meets Music

Martin’s day job is not an element he hides, on the contrary, he embraces it. In fact, the 2013 album, “Good Day At Work,” mirrors the balance between his dentistry and his often-challenging role as an independent artist. A photo in his 2016 album, “Pocket Love,” perfectly encapsulates this balance, with Martin donned in his green scrubs and cap, cradling his treasured alto sax.

“My first love was always playing the sax. If it’s unheard of for a saxophone artist to also want to be the best dentist you’ve ever had, that’s a tribute to the hard work I’ve put in to maintain and cherish these two incredible careers,” says Martin.

Martin’s blend of raw soul with smooth jazz is the perfect remedy for a hot Saturday night. So, make your way to Chayz Lounge this weekend to experience exceptional performances from ‘the Doc’. Even if lollipops aren’t on the menu, an evening of top-notch jazz promises to be an excellent alternative.
