White Knoll High School Senior and Former Lexington County Fireman Perish in Accident
Lexington, S.C – Last night, a tragic accident claimed the lives of a high school senior and a retired fireman in Lexington County. The individuals were identified as 17-year-old James Leonard Ely III, a senior at White Knoll High School, and 63-year-old Kevin Scott Collins, a Lexington County fireman. The collision occurred around 10 p.m. on Kyzer Road, according to officials.
A Tragic Twist of Fate
The incident unfolded when Ely, who was riding a motorcycle with another passenger, struck Collins. Collins was crossing the road after checking his mailbox when Ely’s motorcycle, traveling west, collided with him. Ely and Collins were pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger accompanying Ely sustained minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for care.
Community in Mourning
Given the shock of Ely’s death, a crisis response team of school counselors and psychologists was called into White Knoll High School to help students and staff cope with the loss. Lexington School District One also encouraged families to use Care Solace, a complimentary and confidential care coordination service for student and family mental health needs.
Neighbors expressed disbelief at the suddenness of the tragedy. Kenny Miles, living nearby, shared his devastation. “By God, a grown person going to check his mail, that’s all he was doing,” Miles lamented. Chris Harrington, another neighbor, echoed the sentiment, stating, “It’s unfortunate, they both had to end in such a tragic way.”
Investigation Underway
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Lexington County Coroner are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. While Ely was confirmed to be wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, it was insufficient to protect him from lethal injuries.
