A Fatal Encounter
Kevin Scott Collins, a 63-year-old resident of Lexington, was crossing the street on the 200 block of Kyzer Road after checking his mailbox when the accident occurred. The motorcyclist, identified as James Leonard Ely III, also from Lexington, was traveling west on Kyzer Road when the crash happened.
The coroner’s report stated that Ely had a passenger on the motorcycle along with him. The passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. Ely was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck.

Following the crash, both Collins and Ely were declared dead at the scene by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has been brought in to investigate the incident. It’s worth noting that under current South Carolina motor vehicle laws, teens as young as 15 can obtain a beginner’s motorcycle license from the DMV.
Further details about the investigation and the circumstances of the crash are still pending. The devastating event brings up concerns about road safety measures and legislative regulations for young drivers.
A Grim Reminder of Road Safety
Accidents like these serve as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety measures. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians alike are urged to remain vigilant and cautious whilst on the road, abiding by all traffic rules and regulations. It is essential to be aware of your surroundings and anticipate potential hazards to ensure your own safety and that of others sharing the road.
This tragic event is likely to spur discussions concerning road safety laws, licenses for teenage drivers, and relevant measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Looking Ahead
As our community mourns the loss of two of its members, it’s incumbent upon us all to do our part in promoting safe driving habits to prevent such devastating incidents from recurring. Driving responsibly is not just about adhering to the speed limit but also about being considerate of others sharing the road with us.
Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of Mr. Collins and Mr. Ely during this difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences and support.
