Columbia, S.C. Races for Remembrance in the Tunnel to Towers 5K
On a beautiful Friday in Columbia, South Carolina, the streets filled with excitement and purpose as thousands of participants gathered to take part in the annual Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K run and walk. This heartwarming event honors the brave souls who lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. A Tradition in the Making
Reflecting on this year’s turnout, David Kerr, vice chairman of the Remembrance Foundation of South Carolina, expressed how the event has blossomed since its inception in 2013. “This is something we started back in 2013. We’ve done it every year,” he shared with joy. “We missed one year due to COVID, and it’s something that has grown year after year. We have our largest attendance this year.” Really, it’s wonderful to see how this event has fostered such a sense of community and remembrance.
A Cause Close to the Heart
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which was established in the wake of 9/11, has a mission that is both noble and impactful. It focuses on building smart homes for injured veterans and first responders, ensuring that those who have sacrificed so much for their country are well taken care of. The Columbia event has now claimed its spot as the second largest Tunnel to Towers event in the nation, trailing only behind New York City, with around 2,300 participants this year!

The event kicked off on Lincoln Street, weaving through the scenic routes of West Columbia and Cayce before culminating back on Lincoln Street. It was a delight watching folks of all ages binding together, from young children to seasoned veterans, all striving to show their respect and support. Keri Thomas-Shands, an Air Force veteran who participated, stated, “I just wanted to show my support to my other fallen brothers and sisters and those who lost their lives in 9/11.” Her sentiments resonated with many as everyone’s hearts beat in unison for such a significant cause.
Families and Friends Unite
The event wasn’t just about running; attendees enjoyed guest speakers, live entertainment, and a variety of food trucks that brought smiles and delicious treats to everyone. Families united to remember their heroes, with the Taylor family emphasizing, “We want to remember 9/11 and all the heroes who did so much to help the citizens of America. We want to make sure we never forget.” It was indeed a festival of remembrance and gratitude!
