Traffic Advisory for Columbia Area: Detours Ahead!

Hey there, Columbia! If you’re planning to hit the road this week, you might want to take note of some important detours affecting traffic on Interstate 126. Starting at 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, the ramp from Colonial Life Boulevard onto I-126 will be closed for overnight work. This closure will last until 5 a.m. on Thursday morning, so if you’re driving during those hours, make sure you’re prepared for a little extra time on your commute.

What’s Happening?

The ramp closure is part of an ongoing effort to improve our roadways under the Carolina Crossroads project. This major construction initiative is designed to upgrade the travel hub that connects Interstates 20, 26, and 126. The project is an extensive one, with five phases that hope to wrap up by 2029, but it’s all aimed at making your driving experience smoother and safer in the long run.

Detour Details

So, how does this affect you if you need to get onto I-126? If you’re heading into downtown Columbia and usually take the Colonial Life Boulevard ramp, don’t fret! Drivers wishing to enter the interstate during the closure will be rerouted onto a detour:

  • Start on Bush River Road at Colonial Life Boulevard.
  • Then, make your way to Broad River Road.
  • Continue down to Greystone Boulevard, where you can access the next ramp onto I-126.

Be sure to pay attention to posted signs along the detour route, so you stay on track and don’t miss your turn. And, of course, drive with caution! There may be increased traffic and possible delays because of the detour.

Weather Woes?

National Weather Service has warned us that Tropical Storm Helene is expected to bring some heavy rain, strong winds, and even the possibility of tornadoes starting Thursday and lingering into Friday. This means that the South Carolina Department of Transportation is keeping a close eye on conditions. So, keep your ear to the ground for updates, just in case any changes are needed to the detour schedule due to weather.
