Columbia Metropolitan Airport Plans to Build On-Site Hotel to Enhance Travel Experience

Exciting News for Travelers at Columbia Metropolitan Airport!

If you’re in the Columbia area or planning to travel through the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) soon, there’s some thrilling news that might make your journey even more convenient! Airport officials recently announced plans to construct a 150-room hotel right on-site, which will greatly improve the travel experience for many.

A Hotel Built for Convenience

The vision is for a four-story hotel, situated just a breezy walk from the airport terminal. This hotel is expected to cater to business travelers, flight crews, and anyone needing a place to stay close to the airport. With direct access via a breezeway, guests can return their rental cars, get a refreshing night’s sleep, and walk right into the terminal in the morning. “It’s such a **huge enhancement**,” shares Lindsay Copelan, the Properties Manager for the airport. “We want to provide travelers with a reliable place to rest and recharge.”

Why Now? Why Columbia?

The hotel project isn’t just a fabulous idea to improve travel; it’s also a response to the growing population in South Carolina and the demand for more travel routes. As more people flock to explore the beautifully warm, sunny state, CAE aims to attract more airlines and destinations. With an average high of around 65°F and pleasant weather, it’s no wonder that South Carolina is a popular choice.

The hotel site is just under two acres, with plans for future expansion already in the works. Alia Bostaji, a local real estate expert, has been tapped to help find the perfect developer for the project. And interest is heating up, with major hotel chains like Hilton and Marriott expressing a keen interest in this unique opportunity.

Targeting the Business Traveler

It appears that the timing couldn’t be better! With approximately 70% of CAE’s flights departing before 10 a.m., a hotel situated steps away from the terminal will cater perfectly to those early-morning business travelers. As Bostaji mentions, many corporate travelers prefer the convenience of being able to saunter into the terminal with no stress about transportation delays. “For someone leaving at six in the morning, it just makes sense to stay close,” she adds.

A Unique Edge Over Nearby Airports

Columbia could soon hold a special place in the hearts of traveling folks—or at least their wallets! With similar-sized airports in Charleston and Myrtle Beach lacking on-campus hotels, CAE may gain a competitive advantage. Plus, plans for a rooftop dining experience have been suggested, allowing folks to grab a bite or drink while enjoying stunning views of the airfield. “The community can come out, and they’ll be able to see the planes coming and going,” Copelan mentions, and we can totally see how that would be a fun experience!

What’s Next? Timing and Developments

The plan has been in the works for several months, and now that federal interest rates are starting to go down, things are ramping up! Expect to hear more on this front as a developer is likely to be contracted in the next three to six months. After finalizing site plans and permits, construction could kick off within around 18 months.

More Improvements Coming!

In addition to the forthcoming hotel, Columbia Metropolitan Airport is also expanding its TSA checkpoint facilities, with an expected completion in September 2025. And let’s not forget about the new inspection facilities for the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol—things are definitely moving in a positive direction for travel in Columbia!

As air travel continues to rebound and evolve, the addition of an on-site hotel promises to make Columbia a more attractive route for travelers, enhancing the experience for everyone who passes through. With over 400,000 passengers and 19,000 flights reported this year alone, it’s exciting to see how this little airport is gearing up for big things!
