Columbia Gets Ready for a Remarkable Musical Celebration
Get ready, Columbia! The buzzing sounds of music are about to fill the air. The University of South Carolina Marching Band, known as “The Mighty Sound of the Southeast,” is set to showcase their stunning talents right here in our city before they take New York City by storm for the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. How exciting is that?
A Sneak Peek Before the Big Day
On October 26, at exactly 2 p.m., the band, comprised of over 375 student musicians, will march through downtown Columbia in what they’re calling the “Big Apple Sneak Peek.” This is not just any march; it’s a special dress rehearsal to give locals a taste of what’s to come when they perform live on Thanksgiving Day.
The parade will kick off along Greene Street, starting at Pickens Street. The band will take a right turn onto Sumter Street before making their way down to the State House. As if that’s not enough to get you excited, a free concert will follow the parade on the State House’s lawn. It’s the perfect opportunity to support our local talent while getting in the Thanksgiving spirit!
A Historic Occasion
This year is particularly special because it marks the band’s first-ever spot in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! It’s not just any parade; it’s one that attracts around 28 million viewers every year! The University of South Carolina Marching Band was chosen from over 100 applicants, a proud moment for everyone involved. Director Jay Jacobs noted that the band has been preparing for this moment for more than a year. They’re ready to conquer the 2.5-mile parade route, making Columbia proud!
In anticipation of the big event, the students have raised more than $420,000 for travel and lodging expenses, which covers about 65 percent of what they need. This fundraising effort showcases the determination and commitment from the entire band and the support from the community.
