Farmers in Pelion, a mere 20 miles or so from Columbia, have been producing and harvesting peanuts for years. It has long been an autumn tradition for the townspeople to gather for the annual boiling of the peanuts. Today, members of the Pelion Ruritan Club continue the tradition at the annual Pelion Peanut Party. The Ruritans use a secret recipe for boiling the peanuts; however, they are more than happy to share the final product with festival-goers. The festival features the Princess Pageant, a craft show, parade, exhibits, fabulous festival food, the “Peanut’s Your Way” tent and amusement rides for all.

The Columbia Fireflies are a Minor League Baseball team based in Columbia, South Carolina. The Fireflies are the Low-A Affiliate of the New York Mets and they play in the South Atlantic League against in-state rivals the Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox) and the Charleston RiverDogs (New York Yankees). The Fireflies play at Segra Park, named the 2016 Ballpark Digest Ballpark of the Year and the Ballpark of the Decade. Segra Park is located in the heart of the developing BullStreet District. The Fireflies name pays tribute to the synchronizing fireflies phenomenon that occurs at Congaree National Park each summer. The team, formerly known as the Savannah Sand Gnats (1995–2015), relocated from Savannah, Georgia after the 2015 season, marking 2016 as the Inaugural Season of Columbia Fireflies Baseball in the Capital City. It is the only professional baseball team in Columbia, and the first since the Capital City Bombers moved to Greenville, South Carolina, after the 2004 season. The Fireflies take the field at Segra Park from April to September, playing 70 home games over the course of the season.
