In a community-driven celebration, Andrews, South Carolina is buzzing with excitement as one of its own, Claire McKenzie, recently received a prestigious accolade! Claire is the proud recipient of the 2024 R.D. Bennett Community Service Scholarship, awarded by The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina. This scholarship comes with a generous $5,000 prize, aimed at furthering Claire’s education while honoring her commitment to serving the community.
Claire, a 17-year-old senior at Williamsburg Academy, stood out among a remarkable group of high school students from across South Carolina. Each student completed a community service project vying for the scholarship, but Claire’s project titled “Essential Supplies for Foster Children” caught the attention of the judges and clearly brought home the victory. Through her hard work and determination, she raised over $1,500 to create 100 essential item bags and distribute 109 restaurant gift cards for kids in the foster care system in Williamsburg County.
What’s included in these essential bags? Thoughtful items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, and deodorant—everything a child might need while waiting to be placed in a caring foster home. “The most rewarding thing about this project was witnessing the generosity of others,” Claire expressed. “So many people, companies, and groups came together to support this cause, making it a success for the children.”
The impact of Claire’s initiative went beyond just collecting supplies; it strengthened community ties and encouraged everyone to contribute to a worthy cause. One of the judges remarked, “This was a fantastic idea that will impact so many children and families. You exemplified commitment and motivation in completing your project. Great job!”
Claire’s journey to launch this inspiring project was sparked by her participation in the electric co-ops’ annual Washington Youth Tour. This program gives rising high school seniors an opportunity to visit the nation’s capital and learn about leadership. Out of an impressive pool of applicants, Claire was one of two local students chosen to partake in this unforgettable journey, alongside a total of 57 students representing the entire state.
Named after Robert D. Bennett, the inaugural general manager and executive vice president of The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, the R.D. Bennett Community Service Scholarship encapsulates a spirit of selflessness and dedication to community. Bennett, who led the organization from 1950 until his retirement in 1980, firmly believed in uplifting local communities to enhance the quality of life for their members. Claire’s project not only honors this legacy but revitalizes it through her actions.
The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, Inc. connects nearly 2 million residents across all 46 counties via their member-owned electric cooperative system, overseeing over 800,000 accounts and an astounding 75,000 miles of power lines. Their commitment to community service and support of individual initiatives is evident through scholarships like the one awarded to Claire.
Claire McKenzie is a prime example of a young leader making a significant impact in her community. She doesn’t just envision change; she actively creates it. As Andrews reflects on this achievement, one thing is certain: the town is proud of Claire and looks forward to the bright future ahead of her. Congratulations, Claire, for your hard work and for reminding us all of the true spirit of community!
