Columbia, S.C.: Blocker Dude Ranch Owner Pleads Guilty to Animal Abandonment
In a surprising turn of events, the owner of Blocker Dude Ranch in Columbia, Nicholas Blocker, has pled guilty to multiple counts of animal abandonment. The announcement was made on Thursday by the SC Fifth Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, culminating an investigation that began earlier this year.
The Investigation Begins
It all started back on May 3, 2023, when the Humane Society of South Carolina received a flurry of reports regarding the welfare of several horses at Blocker’s ranch. Concerned citizens reached out, highlighting their worries for the animals, which prompted the Humane Society to contact local law enforcement, specifically the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD), to conduct a welfare check on the horses.
Arrangements for Rehabilitation
After meeting with Blocker, it was decided that the Humane Society would step in to help cover the costs for veterinary care for the horses. The arrangement was crafted with a focus on rehabilitation and education, allowing Blocker to retain care of the animals during the process. Seizure of Horses
Fast forward to August 17, 2023, and things took a serious turn. Authorities arrested Blocker and seized four horses from the ranch, transporting them to Equine Rescue of Aiken for necessary rehabilitation and care. Thanks to the efforts from both the Humane Society and Equine Rescue, the horses were given a second chance at life, free from the concerns that had originally plagued their circumstances.
Changes to Charges
Initially, Blocker faced more severe charges of ill-treatment of animals, torture, and cruel work practices. However, these charges were ultimately reduced to four counts of abandonment of animals on November 12. In a courtroom appearance, Judge Milton G. Kimpson laid down the law after Blocker’s guilty plea, handing down a time-served sentence. As part of the agreement, Blocker relinquished ownership of the three horses he owned, along with custody of a fourth horse entrusted to him by another owner.
