COLUMBIA, S.C. aims to maintain its sense of community through the likes of annual summer activities, comedy shows that bring on the laughter, and fundraisers that work towards a meaningful cause.
Contributing to the 28th annual Pigskin Poets event, the University of South Carolina football team will be shifting its focus from the field to the stage in cooperation with the Richland Library. The mission of the program is to encourage children of all ages to engage in summer reading, a habit that is vital for cognitive development and learning. The event is scheduled for Friday, July 12, from 3 p.m. until 4:30 p.m., and will take place at the Drew Wellness Center.
Next on the agenda, get prepared for a family-oriented evening filled with laughs, as the First Sundays Comedy Show makes its return this upcoming Sunday, at its new location on Diamond Lane. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and the show will commence at 6 p.m. Among those hosting the event will be comedian Akintunde, along with DJ Geechie Man providing the music. The evening promises to be filled with fun and humor, as comedians Small Fire and Tanya Lewis take the stage. And to sweeten the pot? There’ll be free wings available as well!
Lastly, from July 12th to the 14th, the Alzheimer’s Association of South Carolina will be hosting the 16th annual Ride To End Alzheimer’s event. The aim is to bring together over 400 cyclists who will travel across the Midlands and the Palmetto State to collect funds for Alzheimer’s research, care, and support. To date, more than $832,000 has already been raised, inching closer to the targeted goal of $1.5 million.
So whether you’re a literature enthusiast, enjoy a good laugh, or are passionate about supporting a meaningful cause, there’s something for everyone in the heart of South Carolina. These activities not only serve as platforms for enjoyment, but also bring people together, fostering a sense of community, and promoting the dynamic local culture that is integral to Columbia.
These events reflect Columbia’s commitment to promote reading among the younger generation, provide wholesome entertainment for families, and rally behind meaningful causes like Alzheimer’s research. Columbia’s local living atmosphere offers a space for individuals and families to bond over shared hobbies and causes, strengthening the community and fostering a sense of camaraderie.
