On Saturday, in Butler, Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump gathered a crowd of supporters to share his experiences about surviving an assassination attempt, while also targeting his political rival, Vice President Kamala Harris. The rally took place exactly three months after the incident on July 13, where a gunman attempted to kill Trump while he was addressing his supporters.
During his speech, Trump vividly recalled the moment of the shooting, saying, “Exactly 12 weeks ago this evening, on this very ground, a cold-blooded assassin aimed to silence me and to silence the greatest movement, MAGA, in the history of our country.” He described the event as harrowing, claiming that “time stopped” for 16 seconds as the shooter fired from a distance.
Trump paid tribute to Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter who was in the crowd during the shooting and spoke about the loss of life caused by the alleged assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks. Trump shared that a bullet grazed his ear before a Secret Service counter-sniper killed Crooks. To honor the victims of the shooting, Trump led a moment of silence, which was followed by bells ringing and a performance of Ave Maria.
In addition to discussing his brush with death, Trump also used the rally to criticize the Biden-Harris administration. He directed his remarks at several issues, including their response to Hurricane Helene, illegal immigration, and the state of the economy. However, many of Trump’s claims were found to be misleading or false after fact-checking.
For instance, Trump boasted about having low illegal immigration numbers during his time in office by referencing a misleading chart. The chart had been altered to make it appear favorable to his claims regarding immigration while he was in office. In reality, the statistics he presented did not accurately represent immigration trends, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic when restrictions were in place.
Trump criticized Vice President Harris for what he termed an inadequate response to Hurricane Helene, suggesting that victims were only receiving $750 from the government. However, this claim was deemed false. In actuality, the $750 is a part of FEMA’s program to aid immediate needs after disasters, and the Biden administration had already provided significantly more in relief funding.
Trump also made statements regarding crime, claiming that thousands of murderers had been let into the U.S. under the Biden administration. Experts clarified that his figures reflected a long historical timeline and did not imply that these individuals had entered the United States recently.
Moreover, discussions around inflation led Trump to blame Harris directly, stating, “Harris cost you $29,000 a family through inflation and price hikes.” Economists assert that while the American Rescue Plan contributed to inflation, other factors, like supply chain shortages and the ongoing impact of international conflicts, played a more significant role.
Trump’s remarks about Harris’s role in immigration policy also sparked controversy. He said she was responsible for the situation at the border, although it was clarified that she was primarily tasked with addressing the root causes of migration rather than managing border security directly.
Saturday’s rally in Butler served as a platform for Trump to affirm his political stance ahead of the upcoming elections. His supporters rallied around him as he reflected on his past experiences and criticized his opponents. Whether his claims will stand substantiated in the political arena remains to be seen, but his ability to attract crowds continues to demonstrate his influence within the party.
