Exciting Road Improvements Coming to Columbia!

Columbia, S.C. is buzzing with anticipation as Richland County officials recently kicked off the much-anticipated Atlas Road widening project. This project is not just about adding a few more lanes to a road; it’s all about improving traffic flow, safety, and accessibility for the many folks who frequent this vibrant corridor.

What’s the Plan?

Currently, Atlas Road is a two-lane road teeming with small businesses and regular traffic, but change is in the air! Thanks to funding from the Richland County’s Transportation Penny Tax, the area is set for some serious upgrades. The new layout will introduce three new lanes, including a wide center lane for turning, plus sidewalks and bike lanes for those looking to get around without a car.

Proud Columbia resident, Attrophia Bannister, shared her thoughts on the project, saying, “It will be a good idea for them to go walking, running, exercise — kids can walk.” It sounds like the community is rallying behind the improvements!

How Much Will It Cost?

With an estimated price tag of between $56 and $60 million, the project will roll out in two phases. Phase 1 covers the stretch from Garners Ferry Road to Shop Road, while Phase 2 picks up from Shop Road to Bluff Road. According to Public Works Director, Michael Maloney, the first phase is already in motion with an expenditure of around $8 million to relocate utilities along the road, and he estimates the total cost for Phase 1 to be about $48 million.

Phase 2’s total is still being determined but is predicted to fall in the range of $10 to $12 million. “Right where we’re at, we’re looking at a ditch on each side of the road. Instead, if you can imagine… two lanes of traffic will become a wide center lane and then two more lanes on each side,” Maloney explained. Sounds pretty amazing, right?

A Temporary Inconvenience for Long-Term Gain

While construction will inevitably cause some traffic disruptions, Attrophia believes this is a small price to pay for what’s to come. “I live over here so I frequent in this area, so it would be a great idea,” she stated optimistically.

Maloney reported that relocating utilities along the corridor will take around 18 months while they prepare for the simultaneous construction of both phases. The goal? Get both phases out to bid by 2025 and hope to finish the project within three years. That gives Columbia residents plenty of time to buckle up and hang on for the ride of roadway improvements!

Benefits of the Widening Project

So, why is this project so important? Aside from the obvious benefits of smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety, the inclusion of bike lanes and sidewalks means more options for transportation. Families can stroll with ease, joggers can feel secure, and cyclists have their safe space. In short, it’s about making Columbia a more convenient and enjoyable place to live and travel.

In conclusion, Columbia residents can look forward to a revitalized Atlas Road bustling with activity and improved access for all. While a bit of inconvenience may lie ahead, the journey is set to lead to a brighter, safer, and more connected community!
