Exciting changes are happening in Brookland-Cayce as the school announces the hiring of Louis Clyburn as the new athletic director and head football coach at Brookland-Cayce High School. The decision was made by the Lexington School District Two Board of Trustees during a specially-called meeting held on February 3, 2025.
Louis Clyburn isn’t just a popular name in Kershaw County; he comes with a wealth of coaching experience. Currently serving as the assistant head football coach and offensive coordinator at Camden High School, he’s got over 25 years of coaching experience under his belt. It’s safe to say that athletics is his passion!
During his time at Camden High School, Clyburn led his teams to consistent success in the 3A playoffs, boasting an impressive record of nearly 40 points per game over the last five seasons. His coaching prowess has not only resulted in accolades for the team, but they even set school records for rushing offensive totals. In 2019, his team led the entire state of South Carolina in rushing offense—quite an accomplishment!
Clyburn’s Camden Bulldogs enjoyed remarkable successes with championships in the 3A Lower State in 2020, 2021, and 2023. This is no small feat and is a testament to his coaching capabilities and strategic know-how.
Before making his mark at Camden, Clyburn was the head football coach and athletic director at North Central High. During his tenure from 2009 to 2016, he turned the program around, leading the team to playoffs after they had endured previous winless seasons. His achievements earned him titles such as Region Coach of the Year and Region Athletic Director of the Year.
His coaching journey also has roots at Andrew Jackson High School, where he quickly turned the team’s performance around in just a single season. Louis is celebrated for not only developing robust football programs but also enhancing participation rates among young athletes. Under his guidance, a three-team youth football organization was established in Camden, nurturing the next generation of players.
Clyburn’s background in education is just as impressive as his coaching credentials. Having spent 15 years in collegiate coaching, he has experience at prestigious institutions such as Appalachian State, Duke University, Lenoir Rhyne College, and Elon University. At Duke, Clyburn distinguished himself as a talented athlete, playing as a four-year letterman while earning a full athletic scholarship.
Academically, Clyburn holds a double major in political science and history, along with a minor in physical education from Duke University. He has also completed a master’s degree in educational administration from the American College of Education. This unique combination of athletic and academic achievement sets him apart as a well-rounded leader.
In addition to football, Clyburn has experience coaching high school track and golf, demonstrating his adaptability across various sports. He’s dedicated to not only enhancing athletic performance but also focusing on the academic development of student-athletes at Brookland-Cayce.
