In the heart of Columbia, S.C., a young athlete’s bravery and determination are inspiring many. Drevon Dopson, a football player at Brookland Cayce High School, recently returned to the field after an intense battle with health challenges, showcasing a story of resilience that couldn’t be more heartwarming.
The road to recovery wasn’t easy for Drevon. Over the summer, he was unexpectedly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC), a condition that causes painful ulcers in the large intestine. His mother, Octivious Dopson, recalled a shocking moment when Drevon began to feel increasingly fatigued, stating, “What I saw in the hospital, it was frightening.” She noticed her son losing weight and becoming easily tired, prompting concern for his health.
As his football coach, Rusty Charpia, observed, “He doesn’t look the same.” Drevon found himself feeling dizzy and frequently lightheaded, causing alarm among his family and teammates.
In July, just after participating in a football camp, Drevon fell seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital where doctors found that his condition had worsened dramatically. In a life-changing moment, he collapsed and underwent emergency surgery where 90% of his large intestine was removed. His mother remembers, “We realized everything was starting to turn. It was a shocking moment for us.”
Drevon’s stay at the hospital stretched to ten days, during which he relied on feeding tubes and had a colostomy bag installed. His father, Andre Dopson, described those days as incredibly tough, saying, “It was rough man. It was rough seeing him go through it.”
Despite the gravity of his situation, Drevon exhibited a remarkable spirit. Initially, he feared that he’d never play football again. But here’s where the story takes a hopeful turn: doctors were impressed by his recovery. Typically, healing from such a major surgery could take up to a year, but Drevon amazed everyone by bouncing back in just two months!
“His protective PPE on. Everything was wrapped. He also had his flack jacket on,” shared Allen Knotts, a board member for Lexington School District Two and coach’s assistant. With determination and support from his family, Drevon began easing back into football practice, even with the colostomy bag still in place.
Fast forward to September, and Drevon made a triumphant return to the football field. “My first game back, I was kind of nervous. But then after the first few plays, I was doing pretty good. I got off completed passes. I was fine after that,” he gleefully recalled. His team, which had struggled at the start of the season, found hope in his return.
“I think it’s the first game we won,” Coach Charpia reflected with a sense of pride as he looked at the journey of his player. The bond that Drevon shares with his family only grew stronger as they celebrated each moment together, thankful for what they had overcome.
This upcoming Thanksgiving holds a deeper meaning for the Dopsons. “I’m thankful to God…He’s still got me here,” Drevon expressed with a smile. His father added, “God has blessed me, and he’s blessed my son as well.” Meanwhile, Octivious emphasized the joy of togetherness, stating, “To be able to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family, with everybody together…It’s just a blessing from the grace of God.”
With the colostomy bag scheduled for removal in December, Drevon is looking ahead with optimism. By the time he wraps up his high school journey next year, he’s expected to be 100% healthy. This young athlete’s fight and fierce spirit are a testament to the power of resilience!
As we reflect on this incredible story, it’s clear that love, faith, and determination can overcome even the toughest challenges. Way to go, Drevon! Your comeback story will inspire others for years to come!
