Bryn Eddy takes Full-time Editor Role at Lexington Chronicle
In an announcement that has stirred considerable excitement in South Carolina’s journalism industry, Bryn Eddy, formerly of The Sumter Item, has decided to expand her horizons by taking on a full-time role as editor at the Lexington Chronicle.
Eddy had been serving as the interim editor of the Lexington Chronicle while also juggling her duties as a reporter for The Sumter Item, where she covered Sumter government and Shaw Air Force Base. The take over became official on July 1, 2024.
From Summer Intern to Full-time Editor
Reflecting on her journalistic journey, Eddy reflected on her humble beginnings, having first joined The Sumter Item as a summer intern. With very little experience in the field, Eddy was nurtured and shaped by her colleagues at the Item while supplementing her education acquired at Winthrop University in Rock Hill.
During her tenure as the editor-in-chief of The Johnsonian, a student newspaper at Winthrop University, the paper was awarded the top general excellence accolade in the South Carolina Press Association’s (SCPA’s) collegiate news contest. She credits this experience and her extensive work at My Horry News and The Sun News in Myrtle Beach with much of her professional growth.
Continued Contributions to The Sumter Item
Although Eddy has accepted the full-time role at the Lexington Chronicle, she plans to remain active with her roots at The Sumter Item. She will function in a broader capacity as the South Carolina newsletter editor, focusing on enhancing the company’s reach through its newsletters.
While her byline might become a rarer sight, she assured local readers that they would continue to benefit from her attention to detail. She further emphasized that she was looking forward to propagating the success The Item has experienced in growing its audience and community involvement through its newsletters to Lexington and Bluffton.
Welcome Deirdre Currin
With one significant departure comes an exciting entry. The Sumter Item is delighted to welcome Deirdre Currin, a new addition to its newsroom. Currin will spearhead coverage of local government, military, and general Sumter County topics.
Currin brings with her a wealth of experience as a recently graduated student of Francis Marion University, with degrees in English and mass communication. She also has journalistic experience from her time at The Florence Morning News and her internship with the Florence extension of The Post & Courier.
