Historical Cayce Grammar School Set to Transform into Hattie’s Crossing Residential Development

CAYCE, S.C. — A Historical Transformation is On the Horizon!

Exciting news is brewing in the heart of Lexington County as an old school building gets ready to begin a fresh chapter! The century-old Cayce Grammar School, a landmark that has been around for over 100 years, is set to undergo an incredible transformation. It will soon be known as Hattie’s Crossing, a new residential development that pays tribute to the legacy of a remarkable woman—Miss Hattie Derrenbacher, the first teacher in Cayce.

A Journey Back in Time

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, shall we? Back in 1913, the future of education in Cayce began with Miss Hattie opening her home to local children. It all started with a simple kitchen setting—just a single bench in front of the fireplace where she gathered nine eager young minds ranging from grades 1 through 7!

According to Andy Thomas, curator of the Cayce Historical Museum, Miss Hattie didn’t just teach subjects; she nurtured the very foundations of her students’ futures. “She taught for about two years in her home and then they moved to a bigger gym in 1915, which eventually became Cayce Grammar School,” Thomas recalls warmly. The building itself was last used in 1976, leaving it vacant since then.

A Tribute to a Trailblazer

Now, the site is poised to honor Miss Hattie’s lifelong dedication to education through the development of Hattie’s Crossing. This vibrant community will showcase twelve new homes, each ranging from 1,200 to 1,600 square feet. It’s a perfect blend of history and modern living!

Brenda Hafner, superintendent of Lexington Two, highlights the importance of keeping Miss Hattie’s spirit alive. “Reading and math remain our core! Instilling life skills and character development are essential, just as Miss Hattie emphasized with her students,” she noted. Her approach wasn’t just focused on academics; it was about shaping civic-minded individuals who contribute positively to society.

Looking to the Future

Thomas shares heartfelt sentiments about honoring such a progressive figure in education. “Whenever you have someone pioneering a path, it’s crucial to celebrate their legacy. Miss Hattie’s commitment to education as a key component to success should never be forgotten.”

But that’s not all! The new residential development will also feature lovely sidewalks along the property lines, encouraging a sense of community and connection among future residents. And to keep everything looking beautiful, a homeowners’ association will be established to maintain the charm of Hattie’s Crossing.

The Community Gathers

As we look ahead, it’s clear that Cayce is more than ready to embrace this new chapter while paying respect to its past. Hattie’s Crossing is set to create a unique space for families and individuals who value history, community, and the bright futures that education can bring.

So, as the old school stands ready to welcome a new lease on life, let’s remember the inspiring legacy of Miss Hattie Derrenbacher—an unforgettable figure whose commitment to education continues to shape the next generations. Who knows? Maybe the new residents of Hattie’s Crossing will find themselves inspired by her story!
