Exciting news is brewing in the heart of Lexington County as an old school building gets ready to begin a fresh chapter! The century-old Cayce Grammar School, a landmark that has been around for over 100 years, is set to undergo an incredible transformation. It will soon be known as Hattie’s Crossing, a new residential development that pays tribute to the legacy of a remarkable woman—Miss Hattie Derrenbacher, the first teacher in Cayce.

A Journey Back in Time

Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, shall we? Back in 1913, the future of education in Cayce began with Miss Hattie opening her home to local children. It all started with a simple kitchen setting—just a single bench in front of the fireplace where she gathered nine eager young minds ranging from grades 1 through 7!

According to Andy Thomas, curator of the Cayce Historical Museum, Miss Hattie didn’t just teach subjects; she nurtured the very foundations of her students’ futures. “She taught for about two years in her home and then they moved to a bigger gym in 1915, which eventually became Cayce Grammar School,” Thomas recalls warmly. The building itself was last used in 1976, leaving it vacant since then.

Now, the site is poised to honor Miss Hattie’s lifelong dedication to education through the development of Hattie’s Crossing. This vibrant community will showcase twelve new homes, each ranging from 1,200 to 1,600 square feet. It’s a perfect blend of history and modern living!

Instilling life skills and character development are essential, just as Miss Hattie emphasized with her students,” she noted.
