Good news is blooming in the city of Cayce, South Carolina! The long-abandoned Cayce Grammar School, which has been a staple in the community for over a century, is finally getting a fresh start. This historical gem is being turned into a vibrant residential development called Hattie’s Crossing, which will pay homage to its rich educational heritage.

Let’s take a quick trip back in time! It all began in 1913, when the inspiring Miss Hattie Derrenbacher opened her home to the children of Cayce. With just nine students in grades 1 through 7, Miss Hattie taught them right in front of her cozy fireplace. Imagine the warmth and the love swirling in the room as she nurtured young minds! Andy Thomas, the curator of the Cayce Historical Museum, shared, “She taught for about two years, and then, in 1915, they found a gym that was larger to hold more students.” That very gym would soon blossom into what we now recognize as Cayce Grammar School.

The beloved school was in use until 1976, when it closed its doors for good. Since then, it has sadly sat empty, waiting for a new chapter. Well, wait no longer! The land will be transformed into a quaint neighborhood featuring twelve charming homes. Ranging from 1,200 to 1,600 square feet, these residences promise to add a touch of warmth and community spirit back to the area.
Continuing Miss Hattie’s Legacy
Brenda Hafner, the superintendent of Lexington Two, highlighted the importance of education and the values Miss Hattie instilled in her students. “Reading and math are essential skills. She really focused on teaching kids to be responsible and caring members of the community,” she said. It’s clear that the community aims to continue the noble work started by Miss Hattie.
