Lexington, SC – The vibrant community of Lexington gathered to celebrate the life of Carolyn Ann Sawyer Davenport, who passed away on September 21, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Carolyn was a remarkable woman, a devoted mother, teacher, and friend, whose legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Born at home in Johnston, SC, in 1938 to the late Horace Witt Sawyer and Voila Mae Allen, Carolyn was raised in a family that valued education above all. She graduated from Edgefield High School and later earned her degree from the University of South Carolina. Her quest for knowledge did not stop there; Carolyn pursued a Master’s Degree from Rollins College in Winter Park, FL. She dedicated her life to teaching, sharing her love of learning with students at high schools and middle schools across South Carolina and Virginia.
Carolyn’s love for music was more than just a passion; it filled her home with melody. She was an active member of both the First Baptist Church in Edgefield and the Johnston First Baptist Church, where she learned to play the piano. With a natural ability to play by ear, music became an integral part of her life. Her family fondly remembers the way she played the piano, filling their gatherings with warmth and joy.
In 1973, Carolyn moved to Orlando, FL, and continued her career in education, teaching at Apopka High School, as well as serving as a guidance counselor at various middle schools. She was not one to shy away from challenges and was known for her unwavering spirit and deep commitment to her students. After retirement, Carolyn moved back to Lexington to be near her grandchildren, whom she adored.
Once back in Lexington, Carolyn became a dedicated member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, where she was involved in multiple ministries, including serving on the church council and as a Sunday School teacher. Her heart for service extended beyond the church as she volunteered for local non-profits like Mission Lexington, an organization close to her heart.
Carolyn was not just a loving mother and dedicated teacher; she had a zest for life. She enjoyed gardening, diving into politics, reading, and even embraced exercise later in life. Her laughter and sense of humor could brighten up even the dullest of days. Her friends recall her enthusiasm for attending local music and sports events, especially those featuring her grandchildren.
Carolyn is survived by her loving children, including Cecelia Lynn (Maxwell) Fehner, Richard Sawyer Maxwell, and Ann Carolyn Davenport, along with her stepson Robert (Bobby) Everett Davenport Jr. She’s also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Brian, Steven, Sarah, and Michael, who will hold her memory close to their hearts.
A service to honor Carolyn’s life will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, with burial to follow at Mt. of Olives cemetery at 1:30 PM. Before the service, family and friends are invited to gather from 10 AM to 11 AM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Mission Lexington, highlighting Carolyn’s spirit of giving and her dedication to helping others.
As community members share stories and memories of Carolyn, it’s clear that her impact on the lives around her was profound. Her light will continue to shine bright in the hearts of those she loved.
