The Chapin community is in mourning following the death of Michael ‘Mike’ Neal, a dedicated leader and family man who left a significant impact on many lives. As the community prepares for his funeral, they remember the legacy he leaves behind.

Chapin, SC Reflects on the Life of a Beloved Leader: Mike Neal Passes Away

Chapin stands in somber remembrance as the community mourns the loss of Michael “Mike” Neal, a dedicated leader and devoted family man who impacted many lives during his time in this vibrant town. Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Mike was the cherished son of George Irby Neal and Alma Martin Neal. He was raised alongside two sisters, Sylvia Neal VanTyle and Cynthia Neal Morris, and enjoyed a youthful life in the Eau Claire neighborhood before graduating from Eau Claire High School in 1962.

A Life Built on Service

After his high school days, Mike furthered his education at Richland Technical College and later served honorably in the Air National Guard. It was during this period that Mike met the love of his life, Evelyn Anne Johnson, who was studying at Columbia College. Their bond blossomed into a beautiful marriage in 1966, and the couple started their journey together in Eau Claire before settling into their forever home near Chapin.

Mike and Evelyn created a loving family, raising two daughters, Anne Michelle Hunt and Laurie Elizabeth Matthews. Their family continued to grow as Anne married Lee Hunt and welcomed two grandchildren, Anna-Neal and Daniel. Meanwhile, Laurie found her partner in Ron Matthews, becoming the proud mother of four children: Trey, Emmie, Maddie, and Derrick. These family ties were something Mike treasured deeply, and his love for them was evident in everything he did.

Faithful Community Servant

Throughout his life, Mike remained committed to serving his community and his faith. He was actively involved at College Place United Methodist Church and continued to support the mission of Chapin Christian Community Church after moving to the area. His leadership skills shone brightly as he held the position of President of the Methodist Men and led the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class. Moreover, Mike was always eager to lend a hand, chaperoning numerous youth trips that helped inspire the younger generation.

A Passion for the Outdoors

Outside of church activities, Mike was also known for his love of the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were more than hobbies; they were a way for him to connect with nature and enjoy quality time with friends. Mike was a proud member of Dr. Carroll Pinner’s Hunt Club and an engaging participant at the Peak Coffee Club. These gatherings not only allowed him to indulge in his passions but also reinforced the strong community ties that he cherished.

A Respected Career

Professionally, Mike dedicated 39 years of his life to Congaree Construction as a Superintendent, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Even after retiring, he continued to contribute his expertise by working for Edcon Construction for an additional six years. Mike’s work ethic and dedication to his craft reflected the same commitment he showed in his personal life.

Final Goodbye

As Chapin prepares to send Mike off to his eternal rest, a heartfelt funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 3:00 PM. This gathering will be held at the Chapin Christian Community Church located at 415 Lexington Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036. Following the service, family and friends will have the opportunity to come together during visitation, celebrating the rich legacy Mike leaves behind.

Mike Neal’s unwavering love for his family, his dedication to service, and his active participation in the community have left a lasting imprint on the hearts of many. As the community unites in remembrance, they carry forward the essence of a true leader, friend, and devoted father.
