The city of Lexington witnesses an exceptional event this weekend as Chayz Lounge Jazz Club, a notable establishment on Meeting Street, is set to celebrate its seventh-year anniversary. The lavish celebrations are set to take place on Thursday and Saturday night and promise a remarkable experience, especially for lovers of both contemporary and classic jazz.
The jazz club, first opened in 2017 by Chaye Alexander, a renowned DJ and jazz enthusiast, has achieved remarkable consistency in delivering stellar performances over the past seven years. The venue schedules performances every Friday and Saturday night, featuring some of the best local and national jazz talents. Among the distinguished performers who have graced its stage are Grammy-nominated saxophonist Candy Dulfer, vocalist Anthony David, and guitarist NILS, with over 15 hits on the contemporary jazz charts.
However, the performances by local artists are also a major attraction, including acts like the danceable variety band The Groove Masters, beloved local singer Beth Inabinett, conductor Dick Goodwin’s mighty big band, trumpeter Mark Rapp, and many more.
The seventh-year anniversary celebrations are all set to create an unforgettable ambiance with saxophonist David Glymph and vocalist Brittany Turnipseed accompanied by Rod Foster & Company. The set list is replete with fan favorite tunes by renowned music personalities such as Brandy, Bobby Brown, Chaka Khan, Jill Scott, Tevin Campbell, Stevie Wonder, Grover Washington, Jr., Marvin Gaye, Toni Braxton, Janet Jackson, Cameo, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Michael Jackson, and many more.
Interestingly, before the establishment of the brick-and-mortar jazz club, owner Chaye Alexander had been a popular radio personality in New York City. Renowned for her captivatingly warm demeanor and her eclectic music taste, Alexander’s successful career in radio eventually led to the launch of the television show, “Have U Heard.” Here, she introduced viewers to both emerging talents and established entertainment luminaries through her relaxed, conversational interview style.
The show, which was broadcast across 13 cities in the United States, lasted for three seasons, but it was not the end for Alexander. She had a bigger vision – an intimate live performance space for jazz enthusiasts. This vision was realized when Chayz Lounge was born, first within the backroom of a restaurant and later moving to its current location at 607 Meeting Street in 2019.
In spite of the rise and fall of other venues, Chayz Lounge has remained a constant feature on Lexington’s music scene, known for its sophisticated ambiance and strict dress code. The anniversary celebrations this week provide an excellent opportunity for locals and visitors alike to experience the charm and spectacle of this beloved establishment.
