On Saturday morning, around 11:20 a.m., customers and staff found themselves evacuating the popular fast-food chain due to a hazardous incident involving cleaning chemicals.
The drama unfolded when two cleaning products mixed together in a clogged drain, resulting in a chemical reaction. This encounter produced unpleasant and hazardous fumes that wafted through the air, making it difficult for anyone inside the restaurant to breathe comfortably. Responding quickly to the situation, the Columbia-Richland Fire Department, along with specialized HAZMAT teams, arrived at the scene to take over. Meanwhile, Richland County EMS evaluated a total of 13 individuals at the site. The owner of the Chick-fil-A, Chris Eckert, expressed his focus on prioritizing the safety of both guests and team members. In light of the situation, the restaurant made the decision to remain closed for the remainder of the day, planning to resume normal operations on Monday, March 3rd.
