Columbia Metropolitan Airport Sets New Passenger Record, Plans Major Updates

Post-COVID Era Sees Columbia Metropolitan Airport Setting New Passenger Mark, Plans Major Updates

In the thriving city of Columbia, a significant accomplishment has been achieved by the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, marking a new post-COVID record in passenger traffic. Showing firm resilience in bouncing back from the pandemic-induced slowdown, this key transit hub in West Columbia has recently announced a 16% increase in passenger numbers between 2022 and 2023. The airport’s recovery journey did not just stop at crossing the 1 million passenger threshold; it continued the upward trajectory to serve 1.2 million passengers last year.

Major Airport Enhancements Underway

Not resting on these laurels, the Columbia Metropolitan Airport is investing in several major improvements aimed at bolstering its appeal to potential travelers. A notable enhancement is the introduction of an in-line baggage processing system, a project of $1 million. The revamp not only improved airline ticket counters but also revolutionized the traditional baggage handling process by moving it behind the scenes. These changes have eliminated the need for passengers to carry their bags to a secondary location for storage; they can now leave their checked luggage at the ticket counters.

The airport introduced a common use system for its ticket counters, which is expected to streamline the shifting or addition of ticket counters by airlines. This move is anticipated to assist adjustments in airport services and attract more direct and cost
