Columbia Celebrates the Start of the Season with Enchanting Debutante Ball
Columbia’s social calendar kicked off with a bang this Thanksgiving Eve as the elegant Columbia Ball took center stage on November 27. Held at the grand Pastides Alumni Center of the University of South Carolina, the event was nothing short of a social spectacle that brought together families and friends in a night filled with glamour and festivity.
A Family Affair
The evening was hosted by the dedicated president of the Columbia Ball, Mr. Earle Craig Waites, Jr., and his charming wife, Mrs. Waites. Alongside them were proud debutantes, their mothers, and grandmothers, all gathered to witness the remarkable passage of these young women into society. As the clock chimed 7:00 p.m., guests were welcomed with open arms into a warm and inviting reception that set the perfect tone for the night ahead.
Showcasing the Stars of the Evening
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the presentation of the debutantes, a tradition that adds an air of nostalgia and excitement. Each young lady was introduced with great fanfare by Mr. Waites, surrounded by enchanting music from the talented Ross Holmes Band. The debutantes were gracefully escorted by their fathers, showcasing a beautiful blend of elegance and heritage as they made their formal bows to society.
Introducing the Debutantes
Among those honored were the lovely Miss Caroline Everett Little, escorted by Mr. Joseph High Pope, Jr., and Miss Helen Ellsworth Clarke, who was accompanied by Mr. Samuel Sumpter Clarke. The grand ballroom sparkled with excitement as each debutante, adorned in breathtaking gowns, captivated the crowd. Other notable debutantes included Miss Elizabeth Buchanan Kelchner with her escort, Mr. Julius Walker McKay III, and Miss Sarah Helen Irene McNair, stylishly accompanied by Mr. Theron Max Childress.
Celebrating the Generations
This year’s ball also saw a special tribute to family legacies, with a mix of debutantes representing not just the new generation but also beloved granddaughters and guest debutantes. Miss Carroll Barrett Campbell, escorted by Mr. William Brown Bennett, and Miss Virginia Beverley Dunlap, who was presented by her grandfather, both highlighted the connection between generations. The night was certainly not short on charm as these young ladies carried the torch of their family’s traditions.
Beautiful Bouquets & Elegant Decorations
Each debutante was gifted a stunning hand-tied bouquet featuring roses in soft hues of white, blush, and pink, complemented by charming white hydrangeas and antique carnations. Wrapped in soft pink velvet ribbons, these bouquets carried a special significance, representing their connection to the historic Columbia Ball—an impressive touch that added to the heartfelt ceremony.
The ambiance in the ballroom was nothing less than enchanting, with table arrangements of varying heights showcasing beautiful floral combinations that included antique and white hydrangeas, stock, and a mix of garden greenery, delighting all the senses.
A Night to Remember
As dinner was served, the guests mingled and reminisced about past events while enjoying delightful conversations. Dancing followed, with couples twirling across the dance floor, creating beautiful memories they wouldn’t soon forget. The buzz of excitement and sheer joy in the air was palpable as everyone celebrated the significance of this long-held tradition.
