Columbia is bracing for a bittersweet farewell as the beloved Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse announces the impending closure of its Main Street location after nearly three decades of serving up craft beer and delicious meals. The official announcement came via a heartfelt Facebook post released on Friday morning, leaving many fans of the establishment feeling a rush of nostalgia.
Having opened its doors in 1995, Hunter-Gatherer proudly holds the title of Columbia’s first micro-brewery. Founder Kevin Varner made a name for himself in the craft beer scene, turning his passion for traditional English and American ales into a local favorite. His expertise garnered from time spent abroad was pivotal in creating the unique brews that have become synonymous with the establishment. With its warm atmosphere and inviting décor, the brewery has forged many lasting memories for its patrons.
The Main Street location, situated at 900 Main St., will close its doors for the final time on December 28. In his emotional post, Varner expressed gratitude: “It is with a sad and heavy heart that we announce the closing of our Main Street location. It has been an incredible privilege and a pleasure to host you over these 29+ years.” He further thanked patrons for allowing Hunter-Gatherer to be part of their lives, reflecting on the “great run” the brewery has had.
While the end of an era is approaching for the Main Street brewery, there’s still good news to celebrate. The Hunter-Gatherer Hangar location, nestled at 1402 Jim Hamilton Blvd. near the airport, will remain open. Varner reassured the community that while it’s sad to close the original spot, the Hangar continues to thrive and offer the same great experience.
Hunter-Gatherer became a signature destination not just for its brews but also for its hearty food offerings. Dishes like shrimp and grits, gourmet burgers served with hand-cut fries, and fresh goat cheese salad have kept patrons coming back for more, creating a reputation for high-quality meals served in a friendly, laid-back setting. Its flagship beers, including a Hazy IPA and Gravity IPA, have also garnered a loyal following among craft beer enthusiasts.
As soon as the announcement was made, the reaction came pouring in online. Within the first hour, the post gathered over 325 reactions, with more than 120 comments that echoed sentiments of loss for the cherished establishment. One longtime patron poignantly stated, “This place has been my extended living room for decades, and where I learned to appreciate craft beer,” while another lamented, “This will be a huge loss for all of us who love high-quality food and beer in a casual, friendly setting.”
Many locals, like Tracie Broom, who co-founded a local public relations firm, described Hunter-Gatherer as “an institution” that will be sorely missed. Such expressions capture the spirit of the community’s affection for this iconic establishment, which has become a part of the fabric of Columbia.
As the countdown ticks down to the final farewell, the memories produced at Hunter-Gatherer Brewery & Alehouse will surely linger long after the doors close. Here’s to raising a glass to all the joyful times spent within those walls!
