In the heart of Columbia, S.C., the beloved Columbia Children’s Theatre (CCT) is facing a monumental challenge for the first time in two decades. As the curtain prepares to rise on the magic of the holiday season, there’s a looming crisis that could dim the lights of this cherished local institution forever!
Artistic Director Jerry Stevenson recently took to social media to share a heartfelt plea, stating that the theatre must raise $50,000 by January 1st to secure its future and continue sharing joy with families across the Midlands. “Without this financial support, the future of our theatre hangs in the balance,” he said, urging the community to rally around this cause.
The situation took a turn for the worse when Richland Mall closed its doors, leaving CCT without a home. This unexpected shake-up forced the theatre to scramble to find new performance spaces, which came with unforeseen financial strain. As Stevenson pointed out, they are still feeling the effects of the COVID pandemic, which has compounded their struggles.
“Although we’ve turned over every stone to restructure and stabilize the organization, the costs associated with this transition have put us in a precarious position,” Stevenson noted. The theatre is currently renting spaces on Chris Drive in West Columbia but lacks an adequate venue for performances, making it even harder to generate revenue.
In a touching moment, Stevenson shared how deeply committed he is to the theatre. “I have put my entire retirement savings from when I was in Chicago into this company, so HELP!” he exclaimed. The costs of renting multiple venues and the need to find affordable performance spaces have strained their resources dramatically.
If the fundraising goal isn’t reached, the theatre stands to lose much more than just finances. While an immediate closure isn’t on the horizon, drastic cuts will be necessary. “We would have to say goodbye to a staff member, and one of the remaining team would have to take on their responsibilities,” Stevenson added. The continued ability to produce theatre magic for children and families hinges on the generous support of the community.
Despite the overwhelming challenges, there is still hope and excitement in the air! CCT is preparing to celebrate a special milestone—20 years of bringing creativity and joy to Columbia. Stevenson remains optimistic about the future, “I’m hopeful for a miracle to help us get through this. We are committed to our holiday shows and making them a wonderful experience for everyone.”
As the community gears up for the festive season, there’s an opportunity for everyone to pitch in and make a difference! If you’d like to contribute to the theatre’s fundraising efforts, donations can be made through their official channels. Every little bit helps!
The lights may be dimming, but with the community’s support, Columbia Children’s Theatre can continue to entertain, inspire, and nurture the imaginations of children for years to come. Will you answer the call?
