Columbia Children’s Theatre Faces Urgent Financial Crisis, Seeks Community Support

Columbia Children’s Theatre Faces Financial Crisis

Columbia, S.C. — Oh no, folks! It seems our beloved Columbia Children’s Theatre (CCT) is hitting a rough patch like never before. For the first time in two decades, the theatre finds itself in a snarl of financial trouble, and they’re reaching out for a little help from the community—especially with a hefty goal of raising $50,000 by January 1st!

Let’s take a moment to dive into the situation. CCT’s Artistic Director, Jerry Stevenson, took to Facebook to share the news and has been quite candid about the challenges they are facing. In his heartfelt message, he mentioned, “Last year, the closure of Richland Mall left CCT without a home. This unexpected blow required us to find a new space quickly, bringing unforeseen financial challenges.” Ouch! Can you imagine the whirlwind of stress that must have caused?

What Happened?

In case you’re wondering what led to this predicament: the COVID pandemic had already hit the theatre hard, taking a toll on performances and audience attendance. Just as they were getting back on their feet, the closure of Richland Mall added a whole new level of difficulty. It’s like they were just trying to catch their breath, only to be hit with another wave! Currently, the theatre has set up shop on Chris Drive in West Columbia, but they’re not exactly rolling in the dough.

Stevenson explained, “We are renting two spaces and none of those are really generating revenue. We are still having to go out and rent these high school theatres.” Talk about juggling! With the ever-increasing costs, that means even the stuff that makes shows magical, like props, often comes from Stevenson’s own pocket. “I have put my entire retirement savings from when I was in Chicago into this company, so HELP!” he exclaimed. We can feel the urgency in his plea!

Challenges Along the Way

For those of you wondering why it’s become such a challenge, the numbers don’t lie. Due to the circumstances, the theatre’s rent has tripled. Stevenson stated, “COVID and the mall closing” compounded the issue, severely impacting their financials. Currently, they’re engaging with local school districts to use their auditoriums and have even secured a partnership with the new performing arts center opened by District Two. But, let’s be honest—while partnerships are helpful, they don’t always cover the sky-high expenses involved.

The Future Is Uncertain

So, what happens if that $50,000 goal isn’t achieved? Well, it’s a grim picture. While Stevenson doesn’t foresee total closure happening immediately, drastic budget cuts are inevitable. “I don’t think total closure is on the rise immediately, but we would have to lose a staff member and one of the three remaining of us would have to absorb their duties.” Talk about a tough spot to be in!

Seeking a Holiday Miracle

As the theatre gears up to celebrate an impressive 20 years in Columbia, Stevenson remains optimistic. Despite the mounting pressure, they have some festive shows lined up for this holiday season! That’s the spirit! It’s clear how much joy the theatre brings to our community, so we can’t let it fall by the wayside.

If you’re inspired by this story and want to offer your support, you can make a donation to help secure the future of CCT. Every little bit counts, folks!

Let’s rally behind our local talent, spread some holiday cheer, and ensure that the magic of theatre lives on in Columbia for many years to come!
