Columbia’s First Debutante Ball of the Season Shines with Elegance and Tradition

Columbia Celebrates Grace and Charm at the First Debutante Ball of the Season

Columbia, South Carolina, was aglow with elegance and excitement as the first debutante ball of the season took place on Thanksgiving Eve, November 27, 2024. This year’s Columbia Ball was hosted at the stunning Pastides Alumni Center at the University of South Carolina, bringing together families, friends, and dignitaries to celebrate a cherished tradition.

The evening kicked off promptly at 7:00 p.m. with a warm reception, where families and guests mingled, dressed to impress. At the heart of the festivities were Mr. Earle Craig Waites, Jr. and Mrs. Waites, the event’s president, who played gracious hosts for the night. Everyone was eager to witness the formal presentation of the debutantes, who were glowing with joy and excitement as they prepared to make their grand entrance.

A Night to Remember

As the clock struck the hour, the debutantes were introduced, each escorted by their proud fathers. The debutante presentation was not only a symbolic moment, marking their entry into society, but also a display of family heritage and special bonds. It was an emotional sight, with Miss Caroline Everett Little, Miss Helen Ellsworth Clarke, and Miss Elizabeth Buchanan Kelchner among those taking center stage, each escorted by their dashing partners.

Stunning Debutantes Shine Bright

The young ladies who made their bows included:

  • Miss Caroline Everett Little, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pringle Little, escorted by Mr. Joseph High Pope, Jr.
  • Miss Helen Ellsworth Clarke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Samuel Clarke, escorted by Mr. Samuel Sumpter Clarke.
  • Miss Elizabeth Buchanan Kelchner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Brian Kelchner, escorted by Mr. Julius Walker McKay III.
  • Miss Sarah Helen Irene McNair, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chandler Clarke McNair, escorted by Mr. Theron Max Childress.
  • Miss Mary Stephens McMillan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Stephens McMillan II, escorted by Mr. Jackson Elliott Sessoms.

The event also welcomed granddaughters making their debut, such as Miss Carroll Barrett Campbell and Miss Virginia Beverley Dunlap, presenting a beautiful legacy passed through generations.

Gorgeous Bouquets and Elegant Decor

A unique highlight of the evening was the stunning hand-tied bouquets each debutante received, featuring roses in soft shades of white, blush, and pink. Wrapped in soft pink velvet ribbon, the bouquets radiated beauty and grace. Special satin ribbons were added for the daughters, with the granddaughters receiving an additional touch of soft pink velvet, while the great-granddaughters’ bouquets were adorned with delicate white lace.

The venue was adorned with lavish table arrangements, combining antique and white hydrangeas, pink and white roses, and a variety of garden greenery, creating an inviting atmosphere for all to enjoy. The night was made even more memorable with the smooth sounds of the Ross Holmes Band, providing the perfect soundtrack for dancing and celebration amidst the festivities.

Presidential and Committee Highlights

Seated alongside the Waites at the President’s table were notable figures such as Mr. James Edwin Miller II, the Ball’s chairman, and other committee members who’ve dedicated countless hours to making the event a success. Their collaborative efforts showcased not only their commitment to honoring tradition but also the camaraderie and shared purpose that knitting together the Columbia community.

The evening wrapped up with congratulations and well-wishes as families celebrated the successful commencement of yet another enchanting season of debutante balls.

As Columbia looks forward to more moments like these, the charming atmosphere of the Columbia Ball continues to warm the hearts of all those who partake in this beautiful tradition. Here’s to a fabulous season ahead!
