As we approach the cooler months, it’s that time of year again! On Sunday, November 3rd, at 2 a.m., we’ll be turning our clocks back one hour to mark the end of Daylight Saving Time. That means you can enjoy that extra hour of sleep—who doesn’t love that? But many of us often forget to set our clocks before heading to bed, and as we fall back, we need to keep in mind some important tips that can help keep our homes safe during the longer evenings.
Simply put, “falling back” means that we will set our clocks back by one hour. This means that instead of it still being light out during the evening hours, we’ll notice it getting dark much earlier. Gone are those long summer evenings where the sun lingers in the sky! As we dive deeper into the fall and winter season, we’ll begin to see sunsets happening much earlier, which, while cozy, can also pose some challenges, especially when it comes to safety.
Columbia’s Fire Chief, Aubrey D. Jenkins, has an important reminder for all of us this time of year. As we adjust to the new daylight hours, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a moment to test your smoke alarms. It may not be the most exciting task on your to-do list, but checking those alarms can make a big difference when it comes to safety.
Did you know that around 75% of all fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke detectors? It’s a staggering statistic that reminds us of the importance of this simple safety measure. So, grab that ladder, check those batteries, and make sure that all your smoke detectors are functioning properly. If they’re over 10 years old, consider replacing them with new ones. Not only will you sleep better at night, but you’ll also be taking a proactive step towards ensuring the safety of you and your loved ones.
With the days getting shorter, it’s also time to think about your home’s lighting. As the sun sets earlier, make sure your outdoor and indoor areas are well lit. This not only adds a warm, inviting feeling to your home but also helps prevent accidents from happening. Check your outdoor lights and replace any burnt-out bulbs. Consider using motion-sensor lights for added security and convenience—they’ll turn on when they sense movement, which is great for deterring unwanted visitors!
While the idea of losing an hour of daylight might seem a bit gloomy, there’s also something to be said for the coziness that comes with longer evenings. Baking those fall treats, snuggling up with a good book, or enjoying a warm beverage while watching your favorite series can be the perfect antidote to those darker nights. So embrace the change, plan those indoor activities, and enjoy this time of year!
As you adjust to the time change, take some time to get your home ready for the colder months too. Seal any drafts in your windows, check the heating systems, and prep your home for any potential winter weather that could come our way. The more prepared you are as the clock shifts, the more you can enjoy this lovely season!
So, Columbia, are you ready to Fall Back? Remember to set your clocks back, test those smoke alarms, and relish in the warmth and joy that this season brings. Happy fall!
