Columbia Families Advised on Fire Safety as Winter Season Approaches

Columbia Families Urged to Stay Safe as Winter Approaches

In the cozy city of Columbia, where the air is crisp and the holiday spirit fills homes, everyone is buzzing about the beauty of the season. However, as we all gather around to celebrate and decorate, there’s a serious reminder that’s tugging at the Red Cross’s heartstrings. Just last Wednesday, on December 11, a family on Howard Street faced a shocking and unfortunate incident when a fire tore through their home.

Thankfully, the American Red Cross was quick on the scene. They rushed in to assist the family affected by the blaze, providing financial support for immediate needs like food, clothing, and shelter. There are four individuals in the family who are now being helped by the Red Cross volunteers, who are no strangers to such heart-wrenching situations. Did you know that, on average, the Red Cross responds to about six home fires every day in South Carolina alone? And here’s a startling fact: during the chilly winter months, home fires spike by a staggering 30%. Just imagine that!

A Call for Fire Safety Awareness

Yolanda Gainwell, the interim CEO of the Red Cross of South Carolina, emphasizes the importance of fire safety this winter. “Home fires are a real threat to communities across South Carolina year-round, especially during the winter months,” she warns. So, as we deck the halls and snuggle up by the fire, let’s also stay alert and take precautions to keep our homes safe.

In keeping with that theme, the Red Cross has some brilliant decorating safety tips to protect you and your loved ones this holiday season. After all, what’s better than enjoying a twinkling home without worrying about safety hazards? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Candles: Always keep them away from flammable items and out of reach of pets and kids. And remember, never leave burning candles unattended!
  • Holiday lights: Check those cords! Ensure none are frayed or broken. And for those who love to decorate, avoid stringing more than three strands together per extension cord.
  • Outdoor decorations: Use lights rated for outdoor use and make sure they’re securely fastened to avoid any unwanted surprises like fire or electrocution.
  • Live Trees: If you opt for a real tree, ensure it’s fresh and well-watered. Want an easy test? Bend the needles—if they fall off, that tree is already too dry!

Heating Safely: A Must-Do!

As the temperatures dip, heating our homes becomes a priority. However, space heaters are often the culprits behind home heating fires. To avoid any nasty incidents, here are some crucial tips from the Red Cross:

  • Never leave a space heater unattended.
  • Place it on a stable, non-flammable surface—say goodbye to that carpet!
  • Plug those space heaters directly into outlets, no extension cords allowed!
  • Turn it off every time you leave the room or hit the sack.
  • Keep kids and pets three feet away from heating equipment.
  • And yes, never use your oven to heat your home!

As you cozy up this winter, remember to check those fireplaces too. Make sure the embers are all out before heading to bed or leaving the house, and use a fire screen to keep things safe. It’s all about being smart and safe!

Help Those in Need

In the spirit of giving this holiday season, consider helping those affected by disasters like home fires. The Red Cross makes it easy to lend a hand with their Disaster Relief fund. A quick visit to redcross.org can make a world of difference!

Stay safe, Columbia, and let’s all work together to make this holiday season as bright and joyous as possible!
