The collision occurred on January 25, and Morris tragically passed away shortly before her birthday. The community mourns her loss and calls for improved road safety. The suspect, Mikah Macey, faces serious charges and has a history of traffic violations, raising concerns about reckless driving in the area.
In a tragic turn of events, a young man from Columbia has been arrested after his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run collision that led to the death of a beloved local woman. The incident, which occurred late in the evening on January 25, has left the community in mourning and raised questions about road safety.
On that fateful night, reports indicated that the collision took place shortly after 11 p.m. in the area of the Caughman Road, specifically in the 7700 block, between Garners Ferry Road and Leesburg Road. The victim, identified as Javashia C. Morris, a 37-year-old resident of Columbia, was reportedly ejected from her vehicle during the crash.
Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, Morris succumbed to her injuries just five days before what would have been her 38th birthday. The news of her passing struck a chord in the community, leading to a heartfelt funeral service held in Estill, where friends and family remembered her fondly.
Weeks following the incident, the Columbia Police Department launched an investigation to track down the driver of a silver Honda Odyssey believed to be involved in the hit-and-run. Their efforts paid off when they located 22-year-old Mikah Macey, who was subsequently arrested by both the traffic safety unit and violent crime investigators.
Macey was charged with several serious offenses, including hit-and-run involving death, failure to render aid, and disregarding a stop sign. These charges come as a stark reminder of the responsibilities drivers have to their fellow road users.
After his arrest, Macey was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center and remains in custody, with his bond set at an impressive $150,465 for the combined charges. As the legal process unfolds, Macey is scheduled to make a court appearance on April 25.
This isn’t Macey’s first brush with the law; just a month prior, on March 2, 2023, he was found guilty of multiple traffic violations, including speeding over 25 mph and failure to provide proof of insurance. His history of traffic offenses may play a significant role in the upcoming legal proceedings.
As the story continues to develop, the community mourns the loss of a vibrant life while also seeking justice for Morris. With the upcoming court date approaching, many are left wondering how the legal system will respond to this grave situation. One thing is for sure: the impact of this incident will be felt throughout Columbia for a long time to come.
