Columbia Community Receives Crucial Food Assistance Updates Following Recent Power Outages

Columbia, S.C. – Important Updates for SNAP Recipients and Community Support

Good morning, Columbia! As we wake up to a foggy morning, with the sun expected to peek through and bring a high of nearly 80°F later today, we also have some important news to share with you regarding food assistance in our community. The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) is currently taking steps to support families experiencing food insecurity due to the recent power outages in our area.

Supporting Families Affected by Power Outages

In light of the challenges posed by the recent storms, DSS is requesting a waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This approval will allow them to automatically issue federally funded food replacement benefits to households enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) who live in counties where more than 50% of the population faced a lengthy power outage lasting over four hours.

Should this waiver be approved, you can expect that the amount of replacement benefits your SNAP household receives will be determined by your household’s monthly issuance date. This assistance is aimed at helping our neighbors get back on their feet after these unexpected setbacks.

Staying Informed

As the situation develops, DSS will share more details through official channels. It’s super important to stay updated through reliable sources, so if you’re a SNAP recipient, make sure you’re getting your information straight from DSS and not from hearsay or social media. “Verified information is key to ensuring our community is informed accurately during these times,” officials have emphasized.

Need Immediate Food Assistance?

If you or someone you know is without food right now and needs help, don’t worry! Food is readily available through local food banks. Plus, some emergency shelters and feeding sites are operating in the area. To find out where you can get the assistance you need, visit the South Carolina Emergency Management Division website or give them a call at 1-866-246-0133. You can also reach out to your local county emergency operations center for specific information.

Recognizing Community Contributions

2024 R.D. Bennett Community Service Scholarship by the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina. Claire will be receiving a generous $5,000 scholarship to support her college education. It’s refreshing to see young people doing such great work in our community!

Farm Bureau Insurance Support

Moreover, through it all, the Farm Bureau Insurance Claims Adjusters are stepping up to help customers with storm damage claims. If you’re among those impacted by the storms, rest assured that support is on the way.

What’s Next?

As the weather brightens, we’re hopeful for a pleasant day ahead, with only some partly cloudy skies expected later in the day and evening temperatures dipping to around 56°F. It’s the perfect chance to step outside, enjoy the fresh air, and think about how we can all assist each other in these times of need.

Thank you for staying connected and informed, Columbia! Together, we’ll navigate these challenges as a community, and we encourage everyone to lend a helping hand wherever possible. Remember, we’re all in this together!
