Columbia Gears Up for 2025 Point-In-Time Homelessness Count – Volunteers Needed!
As we approach the chilly days of January, the city of Columbia is set to tackle the important issue of homelessness through its upcoming 2025 Point-In-Time (PIT) Count. Taking place on January 22, 2025, this initiative will shine a spotlight on the number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness across our area on a single night.
Understanding the Importance of the PIT Count
Homelessness continues to be a significant concern in cities all over the United States. Organizations at the local, state, and federal levels are working tirelessly to combat housing insecurity. In fact, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) requires an annual count of homeless individuals and families to gather essential data for securing funding and developing effective strategies to end homelessness for good.
Last year, the nation witnessed a staggering 18.1% increase in homelessness, with over 770,000 people counted as homeless during the January PIT Count. This number only represents those living without a permanent home, excluding individuals staying temporarily with friends or family. The reasons behind this increase are multi-faceted, including the lack of affordable housing, the effects of natural disasters, and the rising number of migrants seeking refuge.
Steps to Help: Volunteer Opportunities
To make the upcoming PIT Count a success, the United Way of the Midlands is currently seeking volunteers from all walks of life – whether individuals, families, community groups, or organizations. Volunteers play a crucial role in gathering accurate data, conducting surveys, and observing designated areas throughout the night and early morning of January 22.
For anyone looking to lend a hand, a free training session will be held on January 15. This informative session will cover the PIT Count methodology and guidelines, ensuring volunteers are well-prepared for their important tasks. Volunteers will work in teams, promoting collaboration while making a difference in the community.
As Columbia Prepares for Winter, Local Resources Shine Bright
The need for support in our community extends beyond just counting individuals experiencing homelessness. Local initiatives, such as Project Homeless Connect, provide essential services, including health care, to those in need. Individuals facing homelessness often express the challenges they encounter, especially during the colder winter months in Columbia.
During severe weather conditions, overflow shelters become a vital resource. The Overflow Shelter is designed to keep individuals safe from harsh elements and has remained open during particularly inclement weather, including during Tropical Storm Debby. Recently, approximately 90 homeless individuals utilized this service, which provided meals and a warm place to sleep during frigid conditions.
Transportation to the shelter is made more accessible through the Comet Bus system, allowing those in need to reach these refuge points from downtown locales. It’s a commendable effort to ensure that everyone can have a safe place during these trying times.
How to Contribute Beyond Volunteering
In addition to volunteering, there is a phenomenal opportunity for community members to contribute through donations. The Overflow Shelter relies on the generosity of individuals to provide essentials such as clothing, backpacks, and other necessities. Every little bit helps, and your donation can make a significant impact in someone’s life.
With your support, Columbia can create a brighter future for those experiencing homelessness. Whether you choose to volunteer your time, spread the word, or donate needed items, together, we can work towards creating lasting solutions for our neighbors in need.
If you’re interested in volunteering for the PIT Count, please register online or reach out to the United Way of the Midlands via email at bross@uway.com. Let’s come together to make Columbia a place where everyone has a place to call home!
