Columbia International University Appoints Bill Jones as New President

Columbia, South Carolina — Columbia International University (CIU) has appointed Bill Jones as its new president, as announced by the university’s board of trustees on January 18, 2024. Jones, who currently serves as the CIU chancellor, is stepping into this role effective February 1, 2024. He previously held the position of president from 2007 to 2017.

A Leader with Experience

Jones comes to this role with a rich background in leadership and a commitment to the university’s mission of educating students with a biblical worldview. His previous term as president was marked by significant progress and development for CIU. During that time, Jones initiated various programs, including the first fully online degree program at CIU and the establishment of the Kepha Institute, which reaches students in East Asia.

Under his leadership, CIU also saw the creation of the Cook School of Business, the initiation of intercollegiate athletics, and the construction of six new buildings on campus. Notably, the CIU Prison Initiative, aimed at helping inmates become chaplain assistants, gained full accreditation during his previous tenure.

Acknowledged for His Contributions

In recognition of his contributions, Jones received the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, in 2019. He was also awarded the Key to the City of Columbia by the mayor in 2017, highlighting his impactful ministry to various leaders across different sectors.

Community and Faith Involvement

Beyond the university, Jones is deeply involved in spreading the Christian faith. He co-founded Crossover Global in 1987, an organization responsible for planting over 4,000 churches worldwide. His dedication to his community and mission aligns with CIU’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the Christian message.

CIU Board’s Enthusiasm

The excitement surrounding Jones’s appointment is evident among university leadership. CIU Board Chairman Dr. Hans Finzel expressed confidence in Jones’s capabilities, stating, “Dr. Bill Jones has a rich history serving Columbia International University and the community of Columbia. We could not be more thrilled at his appointment as our next president as we enter our second century of impacting the nations with the message of Christ.”

Transition in Leadership

Jones takes over from Mark Smith, who resigned in February 2023 due to health concerns. In the interim, Rick Christman served as acting president but will continue his role as executive vice president as the university prepares for this leadership transition.

Looking to the Future

As Jones steps into his role, details regarding his inauguration will be announced soon. With his extensive background in education and community service, Jones is expected to lead CIU into a new era, focusing on enhancing the university’s mission and expanding its influence both nationally and internationally.

For students, faculty, and the wider Columbia community, this leadership change signifies a renewed commitment to the university’s foundational values and growth for the coming years.
