Columbia International University Welcomes Dr. Bill Jones as New President During Homecoming Celebrations

Columbia Celebrates New Leadership at Columbia International University

Columbia, SC – Columbia International University (CIU) welcomed a new chapter in its history as Dr. Bill Jones was inaugurated as the university’s eighth president. The ceremony, which took place on Friday, November 1, at CIU’s Shortess Chapel, began at 10:30 a.m. and marked the official start of Jones’s leadership following his earlier appointment in February 2024.

Significance of the Event

The inauguration of Dr. Jones is not just a transition in management; it is a significant event that comes during CIU’s homecoming weekend. The festivities included a President’s Banquet, various class reunions, and a breakfast event featuring notable alumni such as Rob Morgan, a celebrated Christian writer with over 35 published works.

Dr. Jones’ Legacy and Vision

Dr. Bill Jones previously held the position of CIU president from 2007 to 2017. During his first tenure, he facilitated remarkable growth that saw the establishment of intercollegiate athletics, the construction of Pine View Apartments, and the founding of the Cook School of Business. Under his leadership, CIU’s endowment rose dramatically from $12 million to $43 million, showcasing his ability to foster institutional growth.

Jones holds a diverse academic background, including a Doctor of Ministry from CIU’s own Seminary and School of Counseling, another Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon-Conwell Seminary, a Bachelor of Science degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Certificate in Theology from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.

A Community Leader

Beyond academia, Dr. Jones is a well-respected figure in the community. He is particularly known for his Bible study initiatives aimed at marketplace leaders and collaboration with state and federal officials. His contributions to the state were recognized when he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto in 2019, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. Additionally, in 2017, he received the Key to the City of Columbia from Mayor Steve Benjamin.

Personal Background

Dr. Jones is married to Debby Jones, who has a master’s degree in Christian Education from CIU. The couple has four married children and enjoys the company of 11 grandchildren, showcasing a family-oriented lifestyle alongside their professional commitments.
