The beautiful city of Columbia is buzzing with excitement as the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce (SC Chamber) recently announced the winners of its prestigious Legislator of the Year awards. These awards recognize lawmakers who have had a significant impact on the state’s business climate and have shown unwavering support for initiatives that help businesses thrive.
This year, the title of 2024 House Legislator of the Year goes to none other than Representative Roger Kirby from District 101. Since he took office in 2015, Kirby has built a strong reputation as a true advocate for the business community. His efforts include fostering economic growth, improving workforce development, and addressing educational needs in South Carolina. His collaborative spirit shines through as he often seeks bipartisan solutions to challenges facing businesses and citizens alike.
Mike Brenan, President and CEO of the SC Chamber, praised Kirby’s dedication, stating, “Representative Kirby has been a consistent friend of the business community, and we are proud to recognize him as our 2024 House Legislator of the Year.” He also outlined the various issues Kirby has championed, including economic development, lawsuit reform, and education reforms. These efforts, according to Brenan, are vital to securing a bright future for South Carolina.
Expressing his gratitude, Representative Kirby remarked, “It is my distinct honor to be recognized by the SC Chamber. South Carolina depends upon the continued success of our business sector for the overall health and prosperity of our citizens.” He emphasized the importance of tackling workforce development, rural infrastructure, education, and healthcare accessibility to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. Kirby firmly believes that with the strong backing of the business community, these can be addressed effectively.
Moving on to the Senate, the SC Chamber has also recognized Senator Ross Turner from District 8 as the 2024 Senate Legislator of the Year. Turner is known for his staunch commitment to free enterprise, advocating for policies that allow businesses to operate without heavy governmental restrictions. He has played a pivotal role in various initiatives that support the business community, ranging from lawsuit reform to improving access to affordable childcare.
“Senator Turner is a leader on many issues that affect the business community,” said Brenan. “We are grateful for his leadership and unwavering friendship with the business community.” Turner’s dedication to ensuring that South Carolina remains a competitive state for businesses resonates strongly with his fellow lawmakers and community members alike.
In his statement regarding the award, Turner expressed his appreciation, saying, “I’m deeply honored… to ensure our businesses are set up to grow and prosper without regulatory barriers.” With his background as a business owner, he understands the importance of creating an environment that encourages economic growth and nurtures talent from within the state.
Both Representative Kirby and Senator Turner will be celebrated during the SC Chamber’s 45th Annual Summit, scheduled for October 28th-30th at the picturesque Wild Dunes Resort in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. This annual event will serve as an opportunity for chamber members and business leaders to come together to discuss ideas and foster connections that support the ongoing development of South Carolina’s economy.
The SC Chamber of Commerce continues to advocate for a pro-business agenda, working towards making the state the most vibrant economy in the U.S. They aim to create opportunities and prosperity for all residents, providing a pathway for continuous growth and development.
This recognition of our local leaders not only highlights their achievements but also inspires others to engage in the growth of our community, reinforcing the value of collaboration between government officials and the business sector in crafting a better tomorrow for South Carolina.
