Celebrating 20 Years of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center
Nestled in the heart of Columbia, the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center has been a lively hub for events, gatherings, and celebrations for two decades now. Opened in September 2004, this impressive facility has become an integral part of our community, and what a journey it’s been!
A Dream Comes True
At the outset, bringing a convention center to Columbia was no small feat. There were many bumps along the road, from debates on location to financial hurdles. Some even suggested a stunning site over the scenic Congaree River—a proposal that stirred conversation but ultimately didn’t come to fruition. It took resilience, collaboration, and a strong belief in the potential of our community to finally settle on the old SMI Owen Steel Company site for the convention center, and we’ve never looked back.
