On Friday, November 22, 2024, a mesmerizing night took place at the New Brookland Tavern, where local DJs Wandergirl and Kris Love spun their magic for an audience ready to dance the night away. But beyond the dance and beats, the purpose of the Black Venus Collective is all about promoting “healthy escapism.” As DJ Wandergirl, also known as Amber Glover, put it, she wanted to create a place where people—especially those considered “alternative Black folks”—can come together to celebrate, connect, and just be themselves. The idea of the Black Venus Collective sprouted from Wandergirl’s own experiences as a DJ, yearning to see more inclusivity and diversity come to the dance parties in Columbia. When they kicked off their very first set back in April, it was a nerve-wracking moment for Wandergirl. “I thought no one would show up!” she admitted with a laugh. But to her surprise, the turnout was amazing, filled with joy and energy that brought a tear to her eyes.

The Collective has been instrumental in hosting themed nights dedicated to different genres and celebrations, from Afrofunk to their annual Juneteenth festivities. Each night aims to bring community members together, providing a dose of joy that’s so essential in our chaotic lives.

While the beats and lights are undoubtedly a part of the experience, ensuring safety in their club environment is a top priority for Wandergirl and Kris Love. Having witnessed firsthand the troubles that can arise in the nightlife scene—like overdrinking or conflicts—they are committed to promoting an atmosphere that allows individuals to express themselves while leaving the drama behind. “Getting home safe is the most important thing at the end of the night,” Kris emphasized.
