Changes to Parking Rates Approved by Columbia City Council Ahead of March 2025 Rollout

COLUMBIA, SC: Changes Coming to Parking Rates!

Exciting (and a little confusing) news for residents and visitors of Columbia! The City Council has just approved new parking rates that will be rolling out in the near future, and there are quite a few changes on the horizon. So grab a seat, and let’s break down what these changes mean for you!

When’s This Happening?

Starting on March 1, 2025 (or possibly even sooner), you’ll notice some changes when you pull up to park on city streets. If you’re reading this and already losing track, don’t worry! We’re here to navigate the nitty-gritty details together.

What’s the New Rate?

First off, the new rate for on-street parking will now set you back $1.50 per hour. Yes, you heard that right! It’s a little bit of a hike from what you might be accustomed to. But that’s not all – if you end up with a parking ticket, be prepared to dig a little deeper into your pockets, as the fine will bump up from $8.00 to $25.00. Ouch!

Parking Permits – Who Qualifies?

Now, let’s talk about parking permits. If you work in the hospitality industry or you’re a resident living in the city, you’ll be pleased to know that parking permits will be available for just $35 a month. This is a great way to save some cash if you park often!

Where Will the Money Go?

Councilman Will Brennan has assured everyone that the additional funds collected from these parking changes will not just disappear into thin air. Nope! The money is going to be allocated toward infrastructure, maintenance, and repairs for aging parking decks. So, while a few extra bucks may pinch now, the goal is to improve the parking experience for everyone in the long run.

Let’s Dive Into Some New Ordinances!

Aside from rate increases, there are a few other notable changes you should know about:

  • No enforcement on Saturdays for on-street parking, with the exception of the Five Points District.
  • Citywide on-street parking enforcement will occur from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
  • Enjoy the first hour of parking for free in all City of Columbia parking decks!
  • Hospitality rooftop-only parking will be available for $35 a month.
  • Residential owners can apply for owner occupant permits at $30 per vehicle for a 24-month period.
  • Need a visitor permit? It will cost $24 per vehicle (also for a 24-month period).

Final Thoughts

These changes may come as a surprise to many, especially those who enjoy the convenience of parking in our fair city. But with the promise of improved infrastructure and repairs, there’s hope yet for an even better parking experience in Columbia! So, mark those calendars and keep your quarters handy – you’ll definitely want to stay ahead of these new parking rules.

As March 2025 approaches, keep your eyes peeled for more information regarding these changes. City officials are committed to keeping the public informed and up to date. Until then, safe parking!
