A tornado warning is in effect until 8:15 a.m., followed by a severe thunderstorm warning until 8:30 a.m. Experts warn that unstable conditions will continue throughout the day, with the possibility of rough weather persisting into the afternoon. Residents are advised to stay indoors and prepare for potential power outages as strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected.
With the weather in Columbia, South Carolina, taking a wild turn, residents are on high alert this Sunday morning. Early risers found themselves facing not one, but two weather warnings as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes threatened the beloved Midlands region!
Holding onto safety tips and grabbing their umbrellas seems to be the best course of action as the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning effective until 8:15 a.m. Yes, you read that right – the swirling, whirling kind of tornadoes! The storm also prompted a severe thunderstorm warning that lasted a little longer, until 8:30 a.m. But don’t let your guard down just yet, as experts are noting that the possibility of rough weather isn’t going away anytime soon!
As the morning rolled on, threats of severe weather are expected to persist throughout the afternoon as breezy and unstable conditions hang around until about 3 p.m. The sky is not providing much comfort for residents; a tornado watch remains in effect until 2 p.m. for nearly all of the Midlands, including a list of counties like Richland, Lexington, Kershaw, Sumter, and a few others. It looks like today is one to stay indoors!
In a twist of events that has locals worried, a tornado was sighted just after 7:43 a.m. at Dreher Island making its way down Lake Murray towards the dam. This has sent shivers down the spines of many Columbia residents. Keeping an eye to the sky seems like wise advice today!
So what’s fueling these extreme weather conditions? A strong cold front is the main culprit behind strong-to-severe thunderstorms, localized flash flooding, and nasty gusty winds reaching up to a whopping 60 mph! Yes, those winds are strong enough to wreak havoc, potentially causing damage to trees, rooftops, and even those mobile homes that are stately in the area. Residents are advised to brace for possible downed power lines which could lead to outages.
Not only that, but a lake wind advisory has been issued, valid until 8 p.m., warning of persistent winds about 25 mph that can gust up to 40 mph – definitely a no-go for those thinking about heading out on the water today! For Columbia, the rain is looking to pour down with a 90% chance of precipitation expected. Some areas could see as much as half an inch of rainfall, while localized amounts may even be higher!
But don’t lose hope just yet, folks! After this bout of wild weather, the forecast looks to clear up, promising dry and pleasantly warm conditions heading into the week. It looks like temperatures are expected to rise from the 60s straight up to a cozy 78 degrees this Wednesday! With nature’s wild ride coming to an end, Columbia can look forward to some sunshine and warmer days ahead!
This weather situation is certainly evolving, and officials are keeping a close watch on it. Updates will continue to roll in as the day progresses, so keep your ears perked and your umbrellas handy! The Midlands community is strong, and together we’ll weather this storm – literally!
