Columbia is bracing for some serious winter weather! As the temperatures take a dive, residents should prepare for a mix of rain, snow, and biting cold that is forecasted in the coming days. This dramatic weather change is all thanks to a low-pressure system set to roll through the area starting Wednesday.
Before the snow hits, we’ve got a chilly Tuesday lined up in Columbia, with dry conditions prevailing during the day. However, wrangling with below-freezing lows are on the horizon. As evening approaches, rain will begin pouring, and things will get a bit messy as we transition into snow overnight.
During Wednesday, temperatures are expected to barely scrape 45°F, accompanied by northeast winds blowing around 6 to 8 mph. With an 80% chance of precipitation, it’s advised to have your rain gear handy. But brace yourself because when the sun sets, rain will taper off, leading to frigid overnight temperatures lingering near 30°F.
As if that wasn’t enough to contend with, a winter storm warning is officially in effect starting at 4 PM on Tuesday and continuing until 9 AM on Wednesday. Snowflakes are expected to start falling just before dinner, around 3 PM to 7 PM. The heaviest snowfall is forecasted to grace Columbia between 8 PM and 2 AM, with up to 2 inches of snow accumulating in the city, and southern Midlands possibly seeing between 2-3 inches of the fluffy white stuff.
As we head into Wednesday morning, be prepared for a chilling drop in temperatures, which could plummet to around 20°F. With wind chills making it feel as cold as a frigid 9°F, bundling up will be a must! The precipitation is projected to clear by around 6 AM, but slippery roads and potential ice could pose dangerous driving conditions, so plan your travel accordingly.
Moving on to Thursday, while the skies may clear a bit and bring some sun, temperatures will only rise to a high of 44°F, plunging down to a chilly 21°F at night. Friday looks promising with sunshine warming things up just a touch, as temperatures reach 48°F but dip back to 25°F overnight.
As we head into the weekend, forecasts suggest a bit of a warming trend, with highs creeping into the mid-50s and lows settling in the low 30s. By Monday, some relief is in sight with temperatures possibly climbing to 63°F, signaling an end to this uncomfortable cold snap.
But hold onto your hats! Long-range forecasts are already hinting at another wintry mix next week due to yet another system affecting parts of South Carolina. Keep your radar up as a First Alert Weather Day has already been issued for Thursday morning due to potential ice accumulations. With rain poised to return Friday night, it looks like we might be in for a wet weekend ahead!
In the meantime, residents are encouraged to take precautions: cover any exposed pipes and let indoor faucets drip to prevent freezing. With hazardous conditions ahead, stay safe, Columbia!
